Book Description

The German Shepherd dog is easily one of the most widely accepted and recognized breeds of dog anywhere in the world. This classically beautiful breed of dog is known for its amazing versatility. Coupled with extreme intelligence, a German Shepherd is capable of assuming many different roles, including:
  • Companion dog
  • Family pet
  • Herding dog
  • Show dog
  • Obedience dog
  • Working dog
  • Guard dog
  • Police dog
  • Military dog
  • Guide dog for the blind

... and many more besides!

A German Shepherd dog is characterized by its superior intelligence, high curiosity, boundless energy, versatility and regal good looks. These clever dogs can be very easy to train and can seem almost eager to learn new tricks and ways of pleasing its owner at very young ages, right up to very advanced ages.

However, as intelligent and easy to train as they might seem, there are times when some German Shepherd dog owners may begin to feel frustrated and impatient when they don't see much success with their efforts. This can happen when your training methods don't take into consideration what's important to your dog and what makes him want to obey you the most.

In this best selling title from the author of The Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipe Book, you will learn:
  • Is a German Shepherd Dog Right for You?
  • How Much Is Enough Exercise?
  • Choosing a German Shepherd Puppy
  • Bringing Puppy Home
  • Speaking Your Dog's Language
  • Effective Discipline
  • Potty Training Your German Shepherd

About the Author

Sam Hannigan is, and always has been, somewhat animal mad. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his ever expanding menagerie of purchased and rescued animals. At the last count he had 4.5 dogs of varying breeds (the 0.5 is a tiny Italian Greyhound), an indeterminate amount of cats (some are his, and some are locals that come to visit and occasionally stay for the hospitality), two ball pythons, a smattering of rats and a variety of free range chickens. He is only popular with his neighbors due to the organic eggs he shares.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ If Considering Purchasing A German Shepherd! February 23, 2012
By Ryan
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I plan on buying a dog when I move; but I haven't decided what I'll get. I've considered a few breeds, Rottweiler, Husky, and German Shepherd. While I still haven't decided, this guide has certainly influenced my decision. For example, I don't know how much time I'll be able to spend with the dog due to work and various other things; and this guide strongly supports the fact that German Shepherds need a lot of time with their owner. Due to their high intelligence and high energy levels- they are not happy or obedient if not given time to exercise and explore.

This also explains that if the dog doesn't have the the adequate "play time" it will seek to stimulate itself by tearing up your yard and various other destructive past times. I didn't know that, but I do now and it's definitely going to influence my buying decision.

After the initial information on German Shepherds, the pros and cons, the guide goes on to explain the soup-to-nuts of raising and training a Shepherd. From a puppy, to a young adult. It explains how to teach your dog the basic commands, "come", "sit" "stay", "wait", and "drop". It covers the basics very well and gives a few pointers of things to do if you plan on putting your Shepherd through additional training.

Also included is a nice section on leash and collar training which I found out through personal experience- is VERY IMPORTANT! If these dogs aren't trained on a leash properly- you're in for a ride! Take my word for it.

Another important aspect of the training in here covers getting your Shepherd to become comfortable around other people and other dogs which is also VERY IMPORTANT amongst this breed. If you do nothing else in this book- do this!

All-in-all, I thought this was a great overview of German Shepherds. If you aren't sure whether this breed is best for you and your family- you'll know after you read this. If you just bought a German Shepherd pup, this guide will help you TREMENDOUSLY! It will bring you through the basics, and leave you ready for more advanced training.

If you have German Shepherd, or considering getting one, DON'T PASS THIS UP!

-Ryan

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Shepherd Specific Training Tips February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a well-written and well-edited book.

There are a lot of dog training method books, and many of them I think are dangerous both to the dog and (eventually) the owner. I like that this book focuses on positive reinforcement.

My particular interest is getting my puppy to work on a leash. I found the instructions easy to follow and the training tips practical and straightforward. Henry is still a little befuddled when gamboling about, but he's starting to get the idea, without pulling, pain or negative reinforcement.

Good work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a book
I bought and read this book in about 20 minutes. It would best be descibed as a generally informative article, not by any means a how to book. I returned it for a refund.
