How To Tutor, by noted writer Samuel L. Blumenfeld, first appeared 38 years ago. It has without change continued to be an outstanding manual with which to teach the Three R's.  It has not changed because it works so well.  It is a whole school in one book.  Its three parts are (1) Sam Blumenfled's amazingly easy to teach systematic, intensive phonics READING instruction program. (2) His effective CURSIVE HANDWRITING program and (3) his equally effective ARITHMETIC PROGRAM. Has been used by hundreds of thousands parents, teachers and tutors. Mary Pride, leading homeschooling materials reviewer, calls it a best value: $ 24.95, 298 pages.  How To Tutor works at ALL ages.  Anyone who can read can teach the Three R's  with it.  WHY IS HOW TO TUTOR IMPORTANT?  Dr. Blumenfeld warns: Quote: Most parents wait until their child is having difficulty at school before they think of providing remediation.  Sometimes the child is so far behind, so confused, so frustrated by not learning in the first two grades, that the remedial program looks long and difficult.  However, proper tutoring at the preschool level or in the first two grades, as a preventive measure, can make sure that the child has the foundation on which to build achievement Unquote.  How To Tutor provides parents and teachers with a complete instructional program: step-by-step lesson plans in the Three R's.  First out in 1973 it was to help public school students.  Since then, with the continued decline in many plublic schools HOMESCHOOLING has become much more important. Homeschool families discovered what a gem this book is for them.  (1) READING: The big problem today.  How To Tutor shows how to avoid the confusion in teaching reading that prevails in our schools today. 117 complete lessons.  Contains everything you need to teach your student to be a top reader.  You learn the dirty little secret professional educators keep from you:  It is really EASY TO TEACH READING!  There are only 44 sounds (Phonograms) you need to teach your student to build a high level of reading skill.  (2) CURSIVE HANDWRITING: Grandparents today are often shocked to learn that  in many schools cursive is not taught anymore.  With How To Tutor you are given all the tools you need to teach this important skill with ease.  Here is another little secret: Cursive can be taught BEFORE printing (ball & stick).  There are only THREE basic strokes involved in cursive handwriting.  Most children can learn these at a surprisingly early age.  Learning about this will amaze you.  73 complete lessons.  (3)ARITHMETIC: Again quoting Dr. Blumenfeld: In teaching arithmetic it is important to convey the genius of the system itself.  Next to the alphabet, it is the greatest mental tool ever devised by man.  We should approach the subject with the excitement it deserves.  Any teacher who makes arithmetic dull does so because he does not understand its beautiful simplicity, logic and facility which permits us to do so much with so little. Unquote.  Covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, weights, time, and the calender.  Everything up to just before geometry and algebra.  All this in 67 lessons.  FINAL WORD: Anyone can use these lesson plans: students, parents, teachers, tutors, retired teachers, housewives and grandparents.  Tutoring, by the way, can turn out to be a good way to earn extra money while aiding people who need help to improve their reading, handwriting and arithmetic ability.  Some of the claims we make may appear unbelievable.  They are TRUE. We have heard from countless users who canot say enough about its simplicity and effectiveness.  See for yourself. Moneyback guarantee. Editorial Reviews

Review

We have a 14-year-old son who has Downs Syndrome. He began his formal education at age of three. After 10 years of special education in the public school system he had a reading vocabulary of 76 words. His teachers used a sight-word recognition system and considered that a good score. He was very frustrated with his inability to read, so he would copy his siblings by pretending to read. I began to search for a reading program. In reading through the home-school book section at the library, I found a recommendation for the book How To Tutor. After reading that book, I started our son on the phonics program immediately. Within one month he could read over 100 words-more than he learned in 10 years of schooling!!! I was thrilled and so was he. We spent about a half hour a day after school and he continued to progress slowly, but surely. Many of the words were unfamiliar to him such as rap and jab so I explained the meanings and his vocabulary expanded. We have seen a remarkable change in his articulation. When he learned the th sound and saw that bath ended with th, he stopped saying baf. His speech is much clearer and his sentences are more complete. It has been a year since we started with the program and he is finishing the last pages. He is so pleased to be able to read library books, sing along with the hymns at church, and inform the driver what the signs along the road say. Our son does not have a very high I. Q. but he was able to learn to read using phonics. I am sure there are many children in special education programs that could also learn using this system, and I would highly recommend it to other parents. Thank you, Jeanette Metzger --Jeanette Metzger, letter to author, October 2, 1991
Hello, My daughter is 8 and has just finished 2nd. grade in our home school. We are using How To Tutor and we love it. It is straightforward, organized, and superior to so many products you find today with a lot of miscellaneous [material] on the pages. I have used How To Tutor for the past 16 years. I saw information that a workbook [to be used with How To Tutor] was now available. I wanted to check to be sure you are still in business [We are!!] so I could order it. --Linda Melton, Letter to Publisher July, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars The best and least expensive phonics program known to man, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Tutor (Paperback)
I used Alphaphonics to teach my children how to read when they were 4 and 5 years old. It was thorough, VERY easy to use, and worth every penny (and there weren't very many of them needed!). "How to Tutor" is indeed the same thing-different format-and every bit as excellent. I used Mr. Blumenfeld's ideas on teaching cursive )included in this book. I strongly recommend to anyone, buy "How to Tutor" and save your money for those reading books for your children, when before you know it, they'll be reading them, thanks to Mr. Blumenfeld's book. It really IS all that's needed. For all of you who are insecure about teaching your child to read, use this and be encouraged, your child is teachable, especially by you. Just take the lessons in this book and write them on a chalkboard and discuss it with your student (great, by the way, for teaching those of any age who never really learned to read properly) Have you gotten the idea that I REALLY like this book? Don't let the price fool you, you CAN get great stuff cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Word from the Author, August 21, 2001
By
Samuel L. Blumenfeld (Waltham, Massachusetts USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Tutor (Paperback)
The original edition of Alpha-Phonics is now once more in print and is available at Amazon.com. However, How to Tutor teaches more than just reading. It teaches the three Rs: Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic. I wrote it to enable parents with little money to be able to teach their children the basic primary subjects at home. It's simple and easy to use. Because I have been critical of the way public schools teach children the basics, I decided to provide parents with a way to do the job properly at home so that they could be sure that their children learned the basics before going to school. I also recommend that you consider homeschooling. My book, Homeschooling: A Parents Guide to Teaching Children is a comprehensive introduction to the wonderful and exciting world of homeschooling. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book I used to teach three kids to read so far!, July 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: How to tutor (Hardcover)
Happily I located this book through The Paradigm Company (now in its 17th printing.) We created a race track with a prize for each time around the track, representing 12 lessons. Ten times around the track and YOU CAN READ!!! Our seventh grade daughter just scored 13.5 grade level in language with the foundation provided by this book. My first copy fell apart after three children, so I tracked down a new copy to teach my fourth child to read. It's great
