After wrestling with the program for more than a month, I was able to get it up and running in just a few minutes. After browseing in the book for 5 minutes I learned new tips and found the errors I was making. After ten minutes I was making a movie. The book is beautifully illustrated in color. The displays match the computer images perfectly. Well written for the new person wanting to get into digital video editing. This is a must along with the user manual from Adobe. Has great tips for short cuts. Will work with both Windows and Mac users. Numbered steps take you from one phase to the next without missing a beat. Adobe tells you what the buttons are for and what they do. Doug shows you how to use them to make a movie. I would recommend Adobe buy up a bunch of them and include them in their kit. I highly recommend it. Hey, did I say I liked the book?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Premiere Book, November 20, 2001

I spent several frustrating days trying to use the Premiere 6 help screens to learn about the program. My wife brought this book home from the library. What a great book. It takes you from the begining and builds up your mental tool set step by step, with small activities which are two pages at a time. These small activities are well documented with pictures of the sreens step by step. It also provides helpful hints about Premiere as you go along. Each activity teaches you something you will need to finaly export a video. I highly recommend this book. Its really a model which other software texts should follow. The quality of the printing is excellent.

I found the picture by picture style of this book not only anoying, but void of in-depth information. Premiere is phenomenally complicated. This book's "Simple Simon" approach shows how to do the basics step by step without explaining the fundamentals and technical information necessary to master video editing basics. My advice to someone who actually wants to LEARN Premiere? Don't try to take a short cut. If you need a picture book with step by step instructions to work through a software program, Adobe Priemiere is probably not the best video editing tool for you to learn. This book fails to explain the importance of the "Render" command thus confusing the begginer who can't understand why none of the technical tricks of the book are not working. In a nutshell, buy another book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic and well organized, yet slightly E-Z Cheesy, February 19, 2002

This review is from: How to Use Adobe® Premiere® 6 (Paperback)
I have this book and feel like it is good for a beginner , easy to read and full of color diagrams to get you up and running. What it doesn't have though is meaningful discussions on various intermediate level techniques etc.

It should suffice as a reference manual for someone who doesn't want to poke around in Premiere's own online help menu's or is missing the normal manuals and documentation.

What is lacking in this book for me, was the sort of info I felt I needed a book for. There was no serious sidebars for tricky manuevers or off beaten path settings tips to really help me "dig in" to Premiere. I recommend some of bigger books w/ CD-Roms as the weightier titles for in depth settings advice etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!, August 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Use Adobe® Premiere® 6 (Paperback)
After spending a week banging my head on a gate post with the Peachpit Visual QuickStart Premiere 6, which for anyone starting out is completely inpenetrable, I finally gave up. I hunted around all the major bookshops in London in the hope of finding a decent alternative, only to come up with nothing. Eventually my search led me to How to Use Premiere 6, which is an absolute godsend. I reckon to be up and running in no time.

This is a very good starter instruction for Premiere. It will get you to the point where you can use all the major features of the program and produce a nice video. Not recommended for those already familiar with Premiere. It is written with complete instructions, including where to click and which menu to select and what keyboard function key to select. I found it very useful for the first few weeks, but then you'll outgrow it. I would have given it 5 stars had there been a "Part 2" for more advanced topics. If Mr. Dixon DOES put out a Part 2, I'll buy that one also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting started with Digitial Video and Premier 6.0, March 21, 2002

I am new to the world of videography and have purchased the hardware and software to begin producing my own digital video. I consulted with several knowledgeable people and selected Adobe Premier as my video editing suite. One of my friends suggested that "How to Use Adobe Premier" by Douglas Dixon would help me get started and be a good reference for the more advanced capabilities of this software. This book has saved me a huge amount of time and frustration by starting at a very low level on how to use the software. This gives you confidence to tackle more complex tasks. The book then can be used as a reference to show you how to accomplish those tasks. I appreciated the consistent style, good illustrations, and especially the hints. It is a well written guide and reference for beginning and intermediate digital videographers.

Simple, to the point visual walkthrough of what you need to know to create smooth semi-professional videos. Not cluttered with the stuff you'll never use. Focused on those things that you really need and will really use.

1.0 out of 5 stars The book deceives you, October 16, 2001
By A Customer

This review is from: How to Use Adobe® Premiere® 6 (Paperback)
The author promises to take you through the Adobe Premiere step by step. You expect that the author will walk you through at least one complete assignment. Once you finish your first task, however, you discover that the next task is not connected to the previous one, and then the next task, again, is not connected to the one you've just finished. Very soon, you realize that this book is no different than the Adobe's User Guide -- it doesn't have any structure, it doesn't have a sequence of assignments from simple to more complicated. You simply perform different commands, but you have no concept of Adobe yet. You are on page 90, but you haven't edited a single clip; actually, you haven't done anything meaningful yet. Many terms are not defined, many contents menus are hard to find, many tasks are similar to each other. For instance, you are constantly asked to open files or projects, but you don't do anything with them. Then again, you are asked to close Adobe, open it again, open a file or project, and then close it. Very often, the author assumes that you are doing your own work on your own files between his tasks. Then why buy his book? It was a waste of time and money to read the first 90 pages. I am not going to read two hundred more. I am going back to User Guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for newbies only, November 28, 2002
This review is from: How to Use Adobe® Premiere® 6 (Paperback)
This book is clearly for beginners, who are willing to sit down and spend the time going through the steps of the many tasks that make up the book.

The book is organised such that you basically have to follow through all the tasks in order not to get lost.

The tasks are bite-sized, occupying 2 pages and made up of about 6 steps, each step illustrated in color. If you do follow the steps, it's hard to get lost, since every step is well-illustrated, and they even point to you exactly where to click (which borders on being insulting).

It is important to bear in mind the fact that this book is not meant to be a reference book, where you flip to a particular section to find out how to do stuff. You'd probably be disappointed.

Also, since this book as task-oriented, it does not really show you the steps involved in a real project. In other words, going through this book may not properly equip you do successfully complete a large scale project. More experience would be needed. Otherwise, get another book.

All in all, this is great for true beginners, but if you want to go further in Premiere, be prepared to buy another book.
