Expressly for Hobbyists, not Fine Artists,
By Astro-Man (Springfield, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
This book does a good job of showing how to use an airbrush in hobby projects. Because it is for the beginner, there needs to be a great deal more coverage of troubleshooting and cleaning. A bit of theory might not be bad, either. I am the exact target audience of this book, and I was hoping for more of the above, in case I run into trouble.

More About How to Paint A Model,
By
This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
This is an excellent book but the title is a bit deceptive. It spends a little bit of time at the beginning describing airbrushes but does not go into much depth. There is not much on how to select a great tool. Instead it details techniques for painting models. In this, it does a very good job.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn about airbrushing for painting model railroad cars and structures but I know absolutely nothing about them. I still know very little. I did learn some fascinating ways to paint model cars, airplanes and figurines, though. If you want to learn techniques for doing the actual painting, especially on hobby models, this is a great book. Its illustrations are lavish and clear as are the explanations. If, on the other hand, you want to learn about the brush itself in terms of choosing one and maintaining it, look elsewhere.

perfect for beginers,

This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
This book is perfect for anybody who has just purchased an airbrush or has just a little exerience. This book is slanted to modelers (cars, planes, and fiqures) and as such I would not recomend this book if you are not intending to use your airbrush for that purpose. But the book does take you thru a step by step procedures for which airbrush is right for which project, and list some other equipment to use. It even gives a quick description for how to build a cheap spraybooth. The author of the book is mostly known for his work in model cars so many of the techniques that the are slanted toward that purpose but he does delve into someother types of models. The thing that I most appreciated about this book is the ALL of the pictures are in color.

The title should read "Airbrush Techniques for Plastic Model Kits",
This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
Actually, this book was precisely what I was looking for. I had purchased and read several of the other airbrush instructional texts and, while they were great in their own right, they were too generalized for my needs. Most of them start out with how to choose an airbrush, air supply options, etc., but then get a little too generalized as I said. They tend to talk about airbrush techniques as applied to automotive painting, tattoo art, and what-have-you. The bottom line is if you are interested in learning airbrushing skills as they apply to the detailing of plastic model kits, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Not only does the author cover the usual subjects such as airbrush/air source choices, he goes on to ventilation concerns and solutions, choices of paints and protective coatings, and other areas. He also presents several project examples as instructions on conceptual areas such as modeling vinyl figures, weathering (i.e., making something look like it's been through real-life wear and tear), as well as all those little details that transform your kit from an overly detailed toy into a miniature representation of the real item. I was particularly impressed by the chapter "Adding Dirt and Rust to a '63 Chevy Impala". Here he describes some very simple yet convincing method of taking a respectable model kit and making it look like something that belongs in a junkyard, right down to the grimy whitewalls and windshield wiper streaks. For myself and others looking to make such transformations, this book is gold. For others, it's definitely a bit too specialized and will definitely disappoint, hence my suggestion for the title change.

If you are just begining to use an airbrush this book is a must have. I bought the book before my airbrush gun and the book helped get me the proper equipment and techniques to use it properly. I have since turned off the T.V. and created beutiful memories.

I would recommend this book to anybody new to air brushing. While some content may be redundant to an experienced user, there's still a lot of good info there. You can't go wrong for the price!

Great Info, Projects can help, but most are filler,

This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
This book helped me alot with my airbrushing skill. I wish he had written more of the general info as well as some beginner lessons. The projects are ok, I would do a coulpe mabey, but they don't help as much as beginner stroke, and shadowing lessons would have. More info on how to(try) do artwork with a single action brush. All in all a great resource.

This review is from: How to Use an Airbrush (Paperback)
While not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, this is a very good reference. The foundation information needed to be successful in selecting and using an airbrush for model work is provided along with a variety of sample projects that demonstrate techniques. I had prior experience with airbrushes when the book was purchased but I did learn some valuable techinques and tips through the book.

This book was very helpful for me as I am new to airbrushing. Not only did it contain helpful hints and techniques on using the airbrush, but it gave examples of what type of airbrush to buy. Also this book showed examples of how to fix other models already painted with bad spots and what some of the spray patterns look like. I basically felt like I could just pick up my airbrush and start painting like I had been doing it for years.
