Editorial Reviews

Review

For pure and joyous vegan inspiration, try the tenth anniversary edition of How It All Vegan! by Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer.... As the title implies, How It All Vegan! is a celebration of the vegan way of life. “Healthy lifestyles should begin by making conscious decisions about the food we eat and things we do to make it a better world.” For all of that, though, the recipes are great: easy-to-follow and potentially life-changing.
January Magazine (January Magazine 2009-10-27)

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of the book that has become a bible for vegan cooks, this latest version comes with additional recipes and updated information. This well-written book will take much of the mystery out of enjoying a lifestyle that hurts none.
North Shore News (North Vancouver) (North Shore News 2010-01-12)

The pierced, tattoo-sporting authors brought an element of hip to veganism at a time when it was not nearly as popular or mainstream as it is today. In contrast to its modern authors, the book has a 1950’s kitschy feeling that brings a real sense of fun to what could otherwise be a staid topic. Good recipes, thought-worthy intros and some simple how-tos make How It All Vegan! a keeper. This updated edition includes new recipes, color photos, some food updates and an endearing new intro by one of the authors. It is an inspiring vegan cookbook.

About the Author

Tanya Barnard is a new mom and lives in Kelowna, BC. Sarah Kramer is the author or co-author of four previous bestselling cookbooks, How It All Vegan, The Garden of Vegan, La Dolce Vegan, and Vegan à Go-Go! She lives in Victoria, BC with her husband, where she manages a tattoo shop in addition to creating vegan masterpieces.

More About the Author

Sarah Kramer is a vegan cookbook superstar!

Combining her love of food and her love of animals into a home-made cookbook zine to give to friends and family as x-mas presents. Reaction to the zine was so overwhelming that she realized that she was on to something special and her aspirations to do something with her life that made a difference in the world soon became a reality.

This tiny little zine grew into the best selling cookbook How It All Vegan (which has sold over 150 000+ copies and is often referred to by fans as "The Vegan Bible") only to be followed by it's triumphant sequel The Garden of Vegan and La Dolce Vegan both of which are hot on HIAV heels as best sellers.

Sarah's newest book Vegan A Gogo! hit bookshelves in '08.
Sarah's newest work is a 2010 Calendar that hit shelves in the summer of '09.

HIAV has also been awarded the 2003/2004 Veg News Veggie award for Best Veg Cookbook. Sarah was awarded Veg News Veggie award for favourite cookbook author in 2005 and a M-Award in 2006 for Favourite Book for LDV.

Sarah is known for her sassy vintage style and layman's approach to Veganism, and has been joyfully spreading the Vegan gospel to anyone who will listen. Appearing on national TVg9vlKD4o shows like Canada AM and W-5 as well as local shows like New Day Live, Breakfast Television and Go Magazine, she has also appeared as a guest on numerous radio stations such as CBC and NPR. Sarah also does live cooking appearances at festivals such as Word on The Street, Earth Save events and Vegetarian Conferences throughout Canada and the United States.

A self confessed web junkie, Sarah created a safe haven at her website GoVegan.net for Vegan and curious Vegans to meet and talk about issues. She has written columns for Herbivore Magazine and Veg News as well as running The Tattoo Zoo with her husband/artist Gerry Kramer. When she's not at the tattoo shop, or working on her photography she's in her kitchen working hard on perfecting recipes for her cookbooks.

Herbivore Magazine Sarah was born and bred in Regina, Saskatchewan and hopped on a train in 1988 and headed west for Victoria BC, where she has lived ever since. She enjoys long walks on the beach. She laughs loudly during movies...even when nobody else is laughing. She loves puppies and kittens and is scared to go into the basement by herself. She lives with her husband Gerry and Fergus the Dog, on a nice street somewhere near the beach in Victoria.

Sarah believes that Veganism is not just about food, but is a positive compassionate lifestyle choice. She believes the choices we make, however small (from the food that we eat to the shoes that we choose to buy) have a direct impact on how the world turns. Never one to bash people over the head with an aggressive message, Sarah believes that it only takes one tiny spark to start a fire and she has a pack of matches and is ready to burn!

I felt it was time to get a vegan cookbook, after veganizing regular recipes. Of all the many vegan cookbooks in the bookstore, I chose this one after careful consideration. In fact, I didn't pick one on the first trip to the bookstore, because I couldn't decide. It took a second trip to make a decision. Picking the right vegan cookbook would be an important decision because I knew I would be using the book a lot.

This vegan cookbook is more than just a cookbook. I found the stories about the authors, that were in the beginning of the book, to be interesting. The book also tells other facts and interesting things about veganism. For example, it tells how you can get protein, calcium, B12 when you are a vegan.

I was grateful for the substitutions, especially for eggs and milk. This book also has recipes for household cleaners and health/beauty products. It also gives 44 things to do with vinegar. It gives suggestions to feeding kids on the road. This book has so much interesting information.

Now for the recipes. Of course, I haven't tried them all yet. (Probably will never try all of them.)

The apricot & almond tea cookies on page 149 are really awesome. I didn't have any apricots, so I used peaches and apples, and they turned out really good. I guess any type of fruit would work. They are awesome tea cookies. I guess coffee would go good with them, also, but in this heat, cold tea sounds a lot better than hot coffee. I can't wait to make another batch.

The biscuits on page 128 are easy to make, and they taste good. I will be making them a lot more often.

I will not talk about all the recipes I've tried. This book is loaded with so many good-looking and good-sounding recipes.

I decided to learn more Vegan recipes after realizing I wouldn't have a cholesterol problem if I didn't eat anything with cholesterol in it! All animal products have cholesterol, even Fat Free Milk. I also learned that all dairy products strip more calcium from your bones than the food provides! All animal products increase the acidity of the blood. In order for the kidneys to do their job, the acid must be buffered and the body releases calcium from bones and teeth. America drinks and eats the most dairy products and has the highest rate of osteoporosis in the world! No wonder Sally Field ate and drank her dairy products and STILL got osteoporosis! I'd rather not have to take the bone building drugs since the side effects (spontaneous Femur fractures, dissolved Jaw bones, etc.) are rather nasty, so I will reduce my dependence on animal products to hopefully maintain a normal bone density as menopause approaches.

Hence, the search for a practical Vegan cookbook. Having so many cookbooks over a 23-year cooking career, I wanted to find only one to add to the collection that will show me substitutions and give me new ideas for cooking and baking. I pulled every Vegan cookbook off the library shelf and found this to have a practical way of slowly adapting a Vegan eating style to your regular eating. Substitutions for milk products, eggs, condiments and tasty desserts were perfect. There is also a list of different Tofu products out there, what recipes the different consistencies are good for, and how to cook with them. I loved all the Mexican and Asian style foods since many of them can be adapted to vegan very easily.

Have you or you loved one's been affected by the "Thanksgiving Day Dilemma?" By tradition Thanksgiving is a meat-centered day. However, while most Americans celebrate the holiday many hosts or guests, do not eat meat. Hence, millions of hosts or guests are experiencing the Thanksgiving Day Dilemma of what to serve, or bring, to accommodate all palates.

Coming to the rescue of vegan challenged cooks everywhere is How it all Vegan the 10th anniversary edition by Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer. How it All Vegan solves the Thanksgiving Day Dilemma with seasonally appropriate recipes, including, Tofurky, Roasted Garlic Potatoes, Perfect Pumpkin Pie and many more. The recipes are comprised of everyday ingredients and are simple enough for even the most inexperienced of cooks.

How it all Vegan is part vegan cookbook and part primer for living the vegan life. However, while the authors are passionate about their life style they are not preachy or part of what they call the "Vegan Police." Rather they simply explain the why and how of their conversions. Their non-judgmental writing style is what makes this book accessible to vegans and non-vegans alike. Eaters of all palates will enjoy mouthwatering fare such as Classic Spinach Lasagna, Butternut Tomato Soup, Raspberry Cornmeal Muffins, and Peppermint Patties (that look like York Peppermint Patties on steroids!).

Whether you're going vegan for a meal, a month, or for life How it all Vegan is an invaluable resource!
