Book Description

With the interest in vegan living on the rise, it’s time for a book that goes beyond the recipes. How does a newbie adopt a vegan approach when it comes to dating, entertaining, decorating, travel, and beyond? Author Elizabeth Castoria, the former editorial director of VegNews, offers a useful, friendly introduction to the vegan lifestyle for those who want to dabble or for those already committed to living animal-product-free. She shows how simple it is to be vegan, from the food (plants, fruits, nuts, and grains all explained) and nutrition (which supplements are needed), to the etiquette (what to do at an omnivore’s dinner party), travel (where to find the best vegan airport food in the United States), fashion (there's no need to swear off designer duds), and more. To close the book, there are 50 recipes for the beginner vegan. With familiar ingredients and straightforward instructions, and with options from Tofu Scramble and Cheesy Kale Chips to Pasta with Artichoke Alfredo and Fabulous Fudge Brownies, there is no missing meat or dairy with this satisfying vegan food.

Presented in concise, practical easy-to-read pieces, with tips and tricks to employ in all parts of life—and filled with helpful illustrations and humorous ones too—How to Be Vegan presents a vegan lifestyle that is more accessible than ever before.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to be Vegan April 22, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just finished this amazing book, and it is not only educational, but extremely witty and clever. I am not vegan, yet, but this book inspired me to think about my diet and incorporate more plant-based food. I loved the chapters on vegan cleaning products, makeup and clothing. Very enlightening! I feel I now understand how to be vegan, and will never embarrass myself by asking vegans how they get their iron! I will be trying some recipes that Castoria included in the book. They look very tasty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining April 28, 2014
Format:Paperback
I got this for my father who turned vegan after I gave him 'The China Study'. Honestly I'm relieved, due to time restraints I didn't think he would make time to read any book but the humor and diagrams included in this one made it a quick read. Since he travels constantly, the section about airports was really helpful as well.

Before I gave it to him I sat down and read most of it myself and actually found myself laughing out loud, something that was completely unexpected. If you have a friend or loved one that is changing their diet this is a friendly way to show that you care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive resource to get you started April 5, 2015
Format:Paperback
I have pretty much always been a vegetarian. There were times, growing up and even into college, when I took "breaks" for various reasons - generally health-related - but I gave up eating meat very young. My parents, especially my dad, were very supportive of my decision, but it still didn't make it easy. When I was younger, it was very hard to find vegetarian alternatives at the grocery store and unless you lived in an urban area, people thought you were odd if you didn't eat meat. Restaurants didn't have options beyond salads and it grew somewhat frustrating, not only for me, but for my friends and family as well.

Fortunately, a lot has changed since the early 1990's. Vegetarians are a lot more common and almost every restaurant has options, some more than others. Still, a few options are far better than living off salad (not that I mind salad, but we like variety, too!). Even fast food restaurants, with the exception of McDonald's, have come around and started to make it easier to go the same places as the people you know without making a big issue of things.

Of course, that's not the same as being vegan, but it's slowly getting better for vegans, too. Personally, I am not a vegan but not because I don't like vegan food. I actually eat plenty of vegan options and don't mind when products are vegan at all. I just haven't made that step.

My parents were recently traveling and came across the book How to Be Vegan, which they sent me as a surprise. I was pleased that they sent it, because they are not only showing support for our choices, but also helping us eat even better.

This is a great book. It's fairly straightforward, but the writing style is conversational and entertaining.
