Grand Atlantic are the new Oasis (when they were good!),

Grand Atlantic are a rock band that hails from Australia, yet makes music that seems perfectly crafted for worldwide audiences. Mixing up Beatlesque melodies, muscular rhythm section and sublime songwriting, the band's sophomore album delivers a carefully-paced dose of exciting rock that, in a perfect world, would be bursting out of radios everywhere. Opening with the Swervedriver-ish Coast Is Clear, the band's intent is apparent from the first few bars - this is big-picture stuff. Tripwires shows off the brute force of the band's riffs, She's A Dreamer is a 60s-ish radio gem, and Freeway is jangly-pop summer singalong. Title track How We Survive harks back to the Beach Boys-inspired sound of their debut album, while Used To Be The Sensitive Type, Just Another Ghost Town and Holding Pattern are straight-ahead rockers, albeit ones with enough character to be recognizable as superior tunes. These Are The Times is a gorgeous, fragile slower track employing some lovely dynamics, while Don't Say Goodnight is a curious, Lennon-esque piano ballad that allows us to see another side of the band. Really, if you like Oasis circa Morning Glory, or even countrymen Jet, you'll appreciate the sheer quality of this album. Powerpop fans will likely find even more in here to like. The production is entirely appropriate, the artwork is superb, and as an album, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find better in 2009. Highly recommended.
