4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Beginning Coilers, May 24, 2000
By
Pamela Zimmerman (Washington, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: How to Weave a Pine Needle Basket (Paperback)
A real homey approach to beginning pine needle basketmaking, from warnings about hazards when collecting & identifying Western Coulter pine needles, to behind-the-hand admissions (she uses her teeth to pull sheaths.) Jolley has the nerve to say that raffia is too difficult for most beginners to work (which I agree with), to suggest use of dental floss, and tell how she splits waxed linen thread. She has more specific shaping instructions that most books I have seen, and actually has a drawing depicting left-handed coiling, and diagrams needle sheath placement designs, all of which I haven't seen much; but describes only one start and one stitch. A manageable book for a beginner.
