5.0 out of 5 stars A GUESSING GAME BOOK THAT IS ACTUALLY WELL DONE, September 14, 2007
This review is from: How Will We Get to the Beach? (Paperback)
Briefly, we have a young lady who wants to go to the beach with her baby and sets out to do so. She has quite a number of items she wants to take with her and after their car breaks down, she must find some sort of transportation to use rather than her broken car. Each mode she attempts to use has some drawback, i.e. the item, such as the bal, a turtle, etc. will not fit. The reader and the child must guess what item she is unable to take. This is fun and the little ones seem to like it. The writing is simple and repetative. The art work is great and quite eye catching and has charming details - it is funny. It has a rather European flavor to it which is kind of nice. The story flows perfectly with the illustratons. Brigitte Luciani is a good story teller and you certainy cannot fault the skill of the artist, Eve Tharlet. This book is perfect for preschoolers and 1st and maybe 2nd graders. This review is of the hardback edition. I do highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gets five stars from my five-year-old!, June 29, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A mother wants to go to the beach, and like any good planner, wants to bring a few things: a turtle, an umbrella, a book, a ball, and of course, her baby. But every time she tries to get there, the mode of transportation makes it so she has to leave something behind...which she is not willing to do. What is missing in each picture? Little ones will enjoy guessing, and they will also enjoy finding the teeny ladybug in each picture. I liked the Mama's aplomb as she searches for the perfect solution to her problems (look at the picture where she wears the turtle like a bicycle helmet!). My little guy wants this book read over and over, and with this charming interactive adventure, it's my pleasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a find!, April 15, 2008

This review is from: How Will We Get to the Beach? (Paperback)
This beautifully illustrated book is translated from the original French, but the story is sure to keep children ages 4 through 6 engaged and thinking as they figure out from one page to the next, which beach item is missing. I can imagine teachers using this with little cut outs of the beach-bound items so that children can solve each page's mystery as the story continues. A great find.

5.0 out of 5 stars How will we get to the Beach?, February 20, 2007
This review is from: How Will We Get to the Beach? (Paperback)
My 3yr old son loves this book. We have gotten it from the library several times. We like it too because it is interactive, making him think about what item is missing at each stage of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars KNOW EVERY WORD BY HEART, October 9, 2011
All my grandkids absolutely LOVE this book. I have read it so many
times that it's almost in tatters. The illustrations are wonderful.
I'm going to buy more of her books. They are wonderful. Thanks,

5.0 out of 5 stars stimulates thinking skills, March 23, 2010
Roxanne wants to go to the beach, but her car won't start. She wants to take her umbrella, the beach ball, her book, the pet turtle, and her baby, but every form of transportation she tries prohibits her from taking one of the items. Your child will have to look carefully to see which item cannot be taken on each vehicle: the bus, the boat, the hot air balloon, and the bicycle. Finally, along comes a way to go to the beach that allows her to take all five things to the beach.

This is a great book for young children (age 3-6), because it makes kids think, helping them learn to focus on the details of the story and its illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars The kind of book that smart pre-schoolers need!!!, October 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"How will we...?" models many important critical thinkng skills for young readers. It nicely demonstrates problem-solving and consequential thinking (My car won't start, so I'll ride my bike; inference (she's getting on a bus, which item might not be able to go on the bus?); and counting(Roxanne wants to take 5 items with her, how many do you see?"). As soon as your pre-schooler becomes glued to memory games, or finding the things that are wrong and missing in a picture, they will fall in love with this book. Students K-2 might enjoy predicting what will happen next and will be better able to gather evidence to make good inferences.

This is the kind of book that makes me (an educator) wonder how and why "If you give a mouse..." gets all the praise?? If you're a teacher, you will hit some standards squarely on the head with this one. The one notable drawback for me is that the characters seem like they're from a different place and time. That said, children enjoy classic books when the story is a fun read-aloud and is age-appropriate!! My copy was under $3.00. I don't know why it was that cheap. Get it while you can.
