5.0 out of 5 stars Goodman's good oil on everything about gambling, June 20, 2000
This review is from: How To Win (Mass Market Paperback)
If you gamble, this book will be probably be one of the best "investments" you'll ever make in reducing your losses and may even make you a winner. This is an easy to read, common sense book with something for everyone - from the novice to the seasoned gambler.

This American book was first published in 1963. The author, Mike Goodman touts himself as a professional. "How to Win" covers a wide range of gambling, from the casino to horses to poker machines.

The standout of the book is the black jack strategies. There is very sound, probability-based advice on how to play without card counting hassles. One of the most important and often overlooked aspects of gambling - money management - is also extensively covered. In a nutshell, Goodman's advice is bet more when you win and less when you lose.

In most cases, Goodman starts from the premise that in the case of Casino games, the house has an insurmountable edge. But, and here is the magic of his book, he offers sound, easy to apply advice on the best ways to play to minimise this house advantage.

I've been serious about gambling for 20 years and this book has been my betting bible. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book that shows you real money management, February 4, 2009
By
This review is from: How to Win (Paperback)
Ever since my best friend loaned me this book to help me understand craps, I've yet to find another book that even comes close. You see, it was in the late '60s that I read this book. Mike Goodman explaines the one thing, the most critical thing, that all those books I've glanced at missed: Money Management.

Mike Goodman spent most of his life in the gambling world, working his way to an executive position in one of the largest casinos (at that time) in Las Vegas. Since most of the table games have remained relatively unchanged, this book is as valuable now as it was then.

When it comes to table games, nothing is as fast and intimidating as craps. In my early years in Vegas, I too, was intimidated by that game and just watched. I usually walked over the the "21" tables and spent most of my money there. Oh, sure, I had a few nice trips to those tables but never walked away a big winner. Once I read Mike's book, I figured I might as well try to play craps. Well let me tell you, it was the turning point in my gambling lifestyle. The dice went wild and I turned $30 into $600. Yes, I was lucky, right place at the right time. However, without Mike's explaination of dice odds, and WHAT to bet on, I wouldn't have won nearly that much.

A caveat for everyone: This book will not guarantee you anything; you will probably lose more times than you win. That is PRECISELY why this book is so pivotal. Whenever the dice or cards turn in your favor, you MUST bet more aggressively. Depending on your bankroll at the tables, Mike will take you bet by bet through hot and cold streaks, telling you exactly what to bet. I have yet to find a book, system, strategy that comes close to the recommendations Mike gives us in this book.

To fully understand the casino games, to really have a chance of walking away from a table a winner, read Mike's book. And like Mike says in his book, make sure you can afford to lose that money you put on the table!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional advice, July 20, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How To Win (Mass Market Paperback)
The info on playing blackjack has benefited my whole family--never feel like an idiot again! His section on money management is essential as you will realize when you start using it--you can't make any profit during a run without it. The section on craps is somewhat confusing as to the flow of of the game but again, the advice on what bets to place and money management is stellar.
