5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional second book
Most authors never write a second book let a lone a potential second bestseller. Wisner broke the sophomoric blues and followed through with a gem. Nice guys do sometime win. Wisner had been jilted at the altar but somehow made the best of his situation and found happiness. He set out with his brother again to discover how the rest of the globe makes love. He's now...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his earlier book! (Unfortunately!)
I wanted - badly - to like this book. I loved Honemymoon with my Brother and met the two of them during their promotional tour for it - great guys, great book, great story. I was excited about this book and I preordered it, unable to wait for it to arrive. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed it, it doesn't transcend average. First of all, it's more of a love story between...

This review is from: How the World Makes Love: . . . And What It Taught a Jilted Groom (Hardcover)
He's now married with a young son and became a better observer and writer. Go get this book, read it and share it!

I start to read quite a few books, often don't finish them if they aren't compelling enough. This one though decent in the beginning almost fell into the not going to finish pile. It seemed too light, and humorous in just a pleasant, cliched way. But then it picked up considerably, showed lots more depth, the humor a bit more knowing, intelligent and insightful, and then became quite touching honest and heartfelt. I like to travel a lot myself and became envious of Franz' and his brothers adventure. I'm glad he shared what he learned along with way. It was worthwhile finishing the book.

I'm between a four and five star rating here.

I was not sure what to expect when i picked up Wisner's first book but then I could not put it down. An exceptional writing style. So I was excited to hear that he was coming out with a second. The new book, How The World Makes Love did not disappoint. It is a heart felt journey and one we can all relate even if we do not leave our hometown. How do we find love and how do we define the love we are looking for and how do we define the love we have? Wisner helps us get there. Wisner gives us a new perspective -- in fact many new perspectives from India to Africa to Eastern Europe to his own life. Kudos.

For everyone who read Honeymoon With My Brother, this is a must-read. It is more moving, more thoughtful, and even funnier than the first book. I loved it.

First of all, it's more of a love story between Franz and his (now, new) wife. The travel that does happen is primarily interviews with random folks in different countries that results in Franz making generalizations about their lifestyles and attitudes toward love. (It seems to strive to be a sociological look at love in different cultures, but without being a systematic study with any scientific grounding behind it.) Essentially, it's a memoir about Franz finding love, set in a larger context of anecdotes about love world-wide, all chosen to complement his budding relationship.

If you liked Honeymoon with my Brother this is another great read from Franz Wisner. I thought it was a little slow going but once I got into it I really enjoyed it. A nice easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful trip around the world with Franz Wisner, September 15, 2009
By
This review is from: How the World Makes Love: . . . And What It Taught a Jilted Groom (Hardcover)
After thoroughly enjoying the lightness and self-deprecating humor of Franz Wisner's first book, "Honeymoon with my Brother," I was very excited when I was told he had a new one. We were fortunate attend a book signing at Powell's City of Books and have dinner with both Franz and Kurt Wisner. How much has changed since the first book.

This second book was a puzzler at first. I assumed we'd be catching everyone up if they missed the first book. OK, that's fine. But as he traveled, the news about love wasn't good. It wasn't that the writing wasn't good or enjoyable, I just wasn't liking the research results. I decided to trust Franz and keep going. It's not a long book, but my nighttime reading time is precious. I only want nice images before I go to sleep.

As I reached the middle of the book, it began to turn around, there was more his humor and a truly lovely, fun story revealed itself and got back to the hope and joy I had experienced in the first book. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but I'm VERY glad I stuck with the book. I knew the writing style would not let me down, but I wanted it happy.

Thanks, Franz! You did it again - you gave me another book to talk about and recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic writing style, great story telling and cultural education.., September 3, 2009
This review is from: How the World Makes Love: . . . And What It Taught a Jilted Groom (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved Kurt Wisner's self deprecating writing style as he weaved his story back and forth between his new relationship and his continued travels and cultural education. It was often funny, touching and interesting all at the same time. At times it felt like a fictional novel about a traditional relationship story and at others like a non-fiction travel guide on dating, but it went back and forth so seamlessly that it was a testament to his writing skill and the way he was able to share his honest heartfelt thoughts and feelings. I rarely read non-fiction, but I would happily read anything that Kurt writes in the future based upon his first two efforts. Keep it coming Kurt!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love in the end, August 19, 2009
This review is from: How the World Makes Love: . . . And What It Taught a Jilted Groom (Hardcover)
I picked up this book after hearing Franz discuss it during an interview with Gayle King. I had to go get it. I am about to get married and thought this would be good summer reading. Being from L.A., I enjoyed the regional references. But, the best part was the end. All single mothers (which I am) and others will appreciate this sweet story and smart writing. Waiting for the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Honeymoon With My Brother...and that's saying a lot!, April 8, 2009
This review is from: How the World Makes Love: . . . And What It Taught a Jilted Groom (Hardcover)
Far more than a travel book, but it is; far more than how people in countries around the world make love, but it is; far more than a book filled with humor, but it is. If you're a single mom without a partner, this may be a book for you. If you're thinking of dating a single mom, this is a book for you. If you just want a tender, funny, great read...and learn a little about several countries and how they think about love and choosing a spouse, this is THE book for you. Franz's voice is consistent throughout the book...and, for me, it's a very familiar voice, for in the interest of transparency, I must confess, I've known his parents for nearly forty years...and there's a little bit of each of them in this book.
