4.0 out of 5 stars A stew of useful stuff
This is not so much a book as it is a thrown together stew of ideas, suggestions and advice. Most of it pretty tasty. On listening? She tells us listen to learn and keep that your focus. On meetings? Don't pass out a handout because there will always be those who read ahead. On asking someone to do something? Say 'I request" or "My request is", more professional, less...

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful tips
Although the book has a few typos, it does provide some interesting and useful tips for doing presentations and meetings. Most of the book, however, I thought was just repeating common sense and for anyone who's had experience in presenting in meetings, there's not a whole lot of new information. For anyone new to presenting or feel the need to improve on their first...

This is not so much a book as it is a thrown together stew of ideas, suggestions and advice. Most of it pretty tasty. On listening? She tells us listen to learn and keep that your focus. On meetings? Don't pass out a handout because there will always be those who read ahead. On asking someone to do something? Say 'I request" or "My request is", more professional, less adversarial. She offers good advice on cold calling and how to follow up with people you have met---be specific, not general, try to move the process forward(if they say they can't meet, don't just say sorry to hear that but also ask when would be a good time). Also, her book does not, like so many books, start off with a 30 page throat clearing. She gets right to it. Good for her. Take a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, concise and practical, May 5, 2008
This review is from: How to Wow: Proven Strategies for Presenting Your Ideas, Persuading Your Audience, and Perfecting Your Image (Hardcover)
Having tried a large number of such books (my livelihood depends on making a good personal impression), I can say without reservation that How to Wow is the best book of its type available: the advice it contains is hard-hitting, fresh and straightforward. Unlike other volumes I have tried about self-presentation, the advice offered is unique, and the author's examples are drawn from a variety of occupations. At the same time, her methods and advice seem to be applicable to almost anyone: no matter how good you are already, the day after you read this book, you will be making better impressions.

Most refreshing is the fact that How to Wow avoids the trap of so many of its peers, which can be summarized as "Things your mother told you about how to make a good impression that you've forgotten or let slip".

In my view, How to Wow will become a modern classic, and is indispensible to anyone in a trade that requires either presentations or public appearances (or their handlers).

I only wish that I had had this advice fifteen years ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars To the Point, May 16, 2008
This review is from: How to Wow: Proven Strategies for Presenting Your Ideas, Persuading Your Audience, and Perfecting Your Image (Hardcover)
How To Wow is spot on about how to burnish you presence in the world. Spoken with a humorous and a non condescending tone, Frances Jones easily presents and diffuses some of the most basic yet vexing conundrums of the business of life. Whether you are titan of industry or intern with your first toe in the door "How to Wow", like any good encyclopedia, reminds you of what your mother, teacher or mentor taught you and more importantly explains what they didn't.

Excellent read, open to any page and walk a way a little sharper for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy To Follow Advice, February 4, 2010
"How to Wow" is a clearly articulated guide book for presenting yourself as if you are someone that has their sh!% together. Of course, Frances would probably frown on my swearing in her review.

The book covers everything from public speaking to one on one introductions to resume writing, and job interviews.

I actually had some short presentations over the past few days (perfect timing for picking up the book) and the tips and techniques made significant differences. I even had one person comment that public speaking "must just come naturally", which is laughable to anyone who knows me.

Some of the reviewers have pointed out that much of the advice is common sense, and it is. However, just because it's common sense doesn't mean we are practicing these rules.

There are plenty of new nuggets mixed in with reinforcing basics to make this book a must-read for anyone looking to succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips!, August 6, 2009
I decided to pick up this book because I am very shy when meeting new people. Naturally, I get nervous when speaking in front of groups, even if it's just three or four other people.

There were some items that I have heard of before...where to put your name tag, order similar items for a business lunch/dinner, don't order alcohol if your host doesn't, etc. However, the author presented this information in a humorous manner, making the book easy to read!

There were a lot of tips and ideas that I had never heard of. After only reading the book once, it is hard to remember everything you read, so after reading it again, I feel I will be better equipped to implement some of the strategies. I've always had trouble figuring out how to introduce myself to strangers at a networking event, but this book has some basic ideas how to do that...it is common sense, but most of us don't think logically!

I liked the book, and I will be re-reading it soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, direct and relevant, June 20, 2009
Very good book and would be a good read for anyone seeking ways to refine how you prepare, present, and be the best of "Your [Brilliant] Self". I think anyone in business for themselves, as well as any front-line person in for profit or non-profit would benefit from this reading.
What really struck me after reading was it was a self-help book, but the writing approach Frances puts her advise in very practical experiences that any person, at any level will be able to related to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for all kinds of situations, July 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Author Frances Cole Jones doesn't pull any punches -- she tells it exactly how she sees it. And if some of her advice isn't pretty, it can save people from all kinds of "foot-in-the-mouth" situations.

I highly recommend giving this book to college students as well as others farther along in their career paths. What they don't know can hurt them -- and following the advice of this book can be a shield from some of that hurt.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome read, July 15, 2010

How to Wow: Proven Strategies for Selling Your Brilliant Self in Any Situation is a really good read.

It's a book giving you worthwhile advice on how to present yourself in the world of occupations. I agree with the other reviewers that the book feels more like a list of steps involved in helping you succeed, along with feeling a ton of confidence in yourself.

Books like these are important for younger people to read. I think teenagers should really take advantage of this book and read over it several times and really grasp the significance of reaching your potential so when you're out in the real world, you'll be fully prepared.

It covers so much ground that it's pretty important to read it several times just to remember all the useful steps involved. Buy it now.
