This review is from: How to Write Great Science Fiction (Gateways Retro Science Fiction) (Paperback)
Horace Gold's masterpiece mix of short stories and notes is a classic work that anyone looking to learn the fine art of SF storywriting should own. I've benefitted splendidly by having this master of the genre's work nearby while writing my own story (and I credit his "teachings" with helping my work to get accepted for publication!). It is not simply a "how to", it is a selection of Horace Gold's best short stories combined with his notes on how he conceived, formulated, and brought to fruition his ideas. This, to me, is the most beneficial aspect of the book, for while reading the stories, and grasping the mechanics of them through reading is excellent within itself, Gold's notes provide both the amateur and seasoned writer with his insights and understanding which will definitely aid in one's own story creation. |
