I had my doubts about purchasing a book to prepare for the SAT essay. I am not an inherently good writer and therefore was faced with a dilemma when studying for the exam. "How to Write a Killer SAT Essay" shoots it out of the ballpark. Let me explain.

1. It's an understandable book written in "teenager-friendly" language that students can read AND enjoy
2. It has a vast array of anecdotes, student-examples, and structural paragraph guidelines that help tremendously
3. It is cleverly divided so that students can read up on the areas they need help with the most, and skim over areas that they feel confident in

I had sampled numerous other books that touted "Essay-Enhancing" attributes but none were as helpful and insightful as this life-saver written by Tom Clemens. Make the right choice and start studying early! Just wait and see what miracles you will learn to accomplish in 25 minutes or less!

I've taken SATs since 8th grade and I am a high school senior now. In all of my past SATs, I have consistently scored 8 for my essays. I was extremely frustrated because no matter how much I practiced, no matter what advice I could get my hands on, that 8 never budged. Then I came across this book on amazon. I had my doubts when I first purchased this prep book. Let's be honest. With all the positive reviews, it seemed almost too good to be true.
However, after reading this book and implementing the author's guiding techniques in practice essays, I took the SAT again this November and scored 11.

High scoring essay= this book + plenty of practice + confidence

Reading this book and learning about the techniques that actually work and the example essays that were written by real students with real evaluation by SAT essay readers (the author also adds in helpful comments after each essay on what worked) really helped me gain a sense of how to write a high scoring SAT essay and instill confidence in myself. I say confidence because before I used fret because the essay topics always change, so I felt unprepared in case a topic caught me off guard. But this book taught me everything I needed to know and what to prepare so that I have the confidence to know that I can write a good essay from ANY essay topic. And to know that the techniques I learned are applicable to ANY essay topic.

A week before my test, I practiced every day and wrote one or two practice essays using this author's suggested techniques (using prompts from the Official SAT Study Guide) in the few days leading up to the test. The combination of techniques that actually work and sufficient practice resulted in a major improvement from 8 to 11.

This book answers some of the really nagging questions I had about the SAT essay. For example, did you realize that the *length* of the essay is critical? If you can't hit 400 words, you really don't stand a chance of getting a decent score--it doesn't matter how well organized the essay is or how solid your thesis statement or examples. Nothing in the test prep material from the College Board mentions this, and I wish we had been training to write more quickly and not just focusing on coming up with a solid thesis and examples. Plus, the author's advice on having several examples ready before you even begin writing is spot on!

This is such an awesome book that I was tempted to give it 5 stars, but the author doesn't provide easy-to-follow steps or a lesson plan for applying his fantastic advice. That addition would easily tip this book up to 5 stars--heck, maybe even 6 (if Amazon adds that feature).

If my student is able to nail the SAT/ACT essays the second time around #with the help of this book), I may come back and give the author an additional star. But my student hasn't re-tested yet.

This is a truly insightful book written by an extremely intelligent guy who knows how to think outside the box, do more with less, eliminate distractions and strip a daunting task down to the few simple elements that are truly important. I was a pretty solid essay writer before reading this book, but his directions and ideas took me in a completely different direction than I was used to, with the best results I could ask for (I ended up with a perfect score on the essay section). Tom shows you how to take shortcuts, not in a risky way that ends up backfiring on you but in a way that allows you to get under the test's skin and fully prepare yourself for a variety of situations with a single, versatile strategy. To top it all off, he communicates all this in language that is funny, knowledgeable, and unpretentious. Couldn't give the book a higher recommendation!

My son isn't exactly the most "gifted," as I should say, at writing. He excels more in math and science and the essay portion of the SAT was a big obstacle for him. I was absolutely amazed to find out that he got a perfect score on it when we got the results back. The book worked miracles by helping him contrive examples and twist prompts to crank out a wonderful essay. It was without a doubt worth the buy.
