As a fulltime non-fiction author of 14 books, I'm always interested in reading other writers' take on the process itself. How to Write a Non-Fiction Book in 21 Days is one of those books that I can happily refer other writers and wannabe writers to because it focuses on the exact steps you need to take to quickly write a book. From brainstorming your idea to crafting a no-nonsense outline, to writing your first draft and polishing the finished product - this book covers it all.

The author took his book a step further than many other "how to" writing books. He focuses an entire section of writing for the Kindle platform. This includes the all-important book description as well as being smart in your choice of keywords and categories.

I've read and reviewed two other books written by Steve and have found each of them to contain the nuts and bolts needed to actually get something done - rather than just reading about it. Another winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic action plan, not fluff and hype. November 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Since first becoming interested in publishing for the Kindle, I have read a LOT of Kindle books on the topic. Most of them have been pretty lousy, to be honest. It seems like everyone who has thrown up even a single book feels like they can throw up a "How to Publish on Kindle" guide that doesn't tell you much more than the free one that Amazon put out!

I was pleasantly surprised when I read this one. I had a friend tell me about it... I had never heard of Steve Scott before or read any of his books, so I wasn't sure what I was going to get!

What I liked about this book:
* no fluff. It gives you just the information needed to follow his blueprint. He didn't include a bunch of junk just to up the word count.
* realistic. I didn't feel like I'd read the e-book equivalent of a smarmy used car salesman. It is a step by step blueprint that you can actually do. He doesn't hesitate to point out that writing a good book actually takes WORK. (Gee, really? LOL)
* specific strategies. I don't want to go into what they are because, well, you should just read the book. But each step had a specific action to accomplish and a specific tip on how to accomplish it. Many of them I knew... but hadn't put together in that order. And there were a couple that gave me real "light bulb" moments.

So, time for me to get my butt in a chair and do the work... A big thank you to Steve Scott for this concise guide. Thank you, Steve Scott, your blog is now in my Firefox bookmarks to be checked regularly.

IT WORKS! Thanks, Steve! I wrote my book PLUS a humorous "How-to" book where I followed Steve's plan: How I Wrote 2 eBooks in 21 Days; Damn Funny. Seriously. It CAN be done folks! Steve will tell you how!

Wow, how much can you say about a book that inspires you enough to get off your biscuits and actually WRITE the book that's been bottled up inside of you?

I'm following Steve's plan. This is day 3 for me. My dining room table is an explosion of index cards and my brain is dumping out the stuff I've only thought about for 20 years. (Hey, not the ONLY stuff -- I do have a life!)

I'm trusting in the plan, and it sure is WAY too early to tell the results. But (good Lord willing and the creak don't rise) you will see MY book for sale on Kindle 21 days from today (apparently it takes 48 hours to go live).

So look for my book on February 20, 2013. If you don't see it, don't blame Steve. He's already changed my life by pushing me over the eBook cliff. If I don't land it's my own fault.

Oh, my title? Well, my lovely bride and I were Vermont innkeepers for 15 years. I have always been surprised that the innkeeping "how to" books are long on theoretical advice and short on the actual tricks of the trade of how to MAKE MONEY!

After all, you won't live the dream for long if you can't pay the mortgage. We've seen too many boneheaded mistakes made by good people that could have been avoided with some "real world" advice. Some get to live (financially) to tell the tale and others blow through their nest eggs before figuring it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic road map November 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Steve is known for his down-to-earth approach to online business. He has a rare ability to break down complex processes into digestible chunks. I also appreciate his dedication to being honest and realistic about what normal people can achieve online. And this is what this book is all about - it's not about writing an e-book in your sleep or something as ridiculous. It's about taking your time to develop a fully-fledged nonfiction book while tending to your other obligation that we all have. Looking forward to more from Steve.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good info but he doesn't practice what he preaches February 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I did find some good information in here; if you are the type of person that needs things broken down into actionable steps, then this book would benefit you, as he includes a day-by-day list of small steps to follow to get you to your goal. With that said, if you are anything other than a first-time writer, this book will not get you much farther than you already are.

With the author's stressing on proofreading, proofreading, proofreading after the rough draft, one would think that his books would be relatively typo-free and grammatically correct. They are not. It is obvious that he is not practicing what he preaches, which is to read the book aloud to yourself, because glaring issues like "their" instead of "there" appear, as well as plurals instead of singulars and words that are completely missing from sentences. If you're wondering why I would care, it's because for an authority to preach to his readers how important copyediting is--and he not use those best practices himself--makes me suspect regarding the author's intention for his books. Are they really to ensure that the highest quality information gets to his readers, or is it about a quick buck for early adopters and beginners? The author's word-stuffing to reach the sweet spot for Kindle book length is apparent, since many sentences are repeated, nearly verbatim.

There are thousands of books about writing books out there, and I am sure that there are many worse than this. Use it for the 21-day action plan, which is worth the Kindle price. And remember to proofread your copy, or better yet pay someone professional to do it for you.
