Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Morris, a highly acclaimed Christian author, illustrates the art of developing the three basic elements of novel writing: plot, character, and setting. In well-defined terms, with a collection of examples from his own published novels, Morris guides the aspiring novelist in constructing a plot, deciding on point of view, writing dialogue, and developing character and setting. He concludes each chapter with helpful exercises to develop the skills just taught. His final chapter details the steps of marketing, including formatting manuscripts and surviving rejection. Most of the suggestions in this book would apply to writing any novel, so why does Morris specify Christian novel writing? He feels that because many Christian novelists paint their characters as flawless saints, there is a need for writers who want to create wholesome books and provide realistic entertainment. Writing for enjoyment, monetary rewards, and recognition are all worthwhile goals, but as a Christian novelist, Morris wants his work to make a positive, moral impact on readers. He believes that talent combined with tenacity contains the ingredients for successful writing. Highly recommended as a practical resource for aspiring writers. Patty O'Connell

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, to-the-point and helpful., September 1, 1997

This is a terrific guide for writing ANY kind of novels. The fact that Morris writes "Christian" novels should not put-off anyone. He is neither preachy nor a "Bible-thumper." His method is clear, methodical and practical.

Novelist-wannabees like myself can pick up the means of constructing the skeletal frame on which to hang a story. Using excerpts from several works (many of them his own novels), Morris gives practical examples of how to carry out each instruction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mr. Morris, June 22, 2000
This review is from: How to Write (And Sell) a Christian Novel: Proven and Practical Advice from a Best-Selling Author (Hardcover)
I would like to thank Mr. Gilbert Morris for writing this book, for this is the guide I used in writing my first novel, a Christian novel of Irish immigration in the early 1850s, A Smile Across the Wheat. I worked very hard on my novel, and it was Mr. Morris' step-by-step solutions that helped me achieve this goal. I would highly recommend this book as a guideline for anyone who loves writing. ...
