This book/CD combo is great for the beginner wanting to learn to yodel. I have very little experience with music at all, and have never sung. Yet, this book is really showing me how to do what I need to. The beginning with Rudy Robbins features a number of very easy yodels and songs that are fun. Shirley Williams parts are challening but very fun to yodel. The only compaint I have is that much of the middle of the CD is on one track making repetition of some of those yodels tedious. If you're interested in getting starting yodeling then this is the book for you. Besides it's the only one out there.

I had such a great time with this. You can't be sad while you yodel. The first half of this recording and book set is great. Rudy Robbins, a friendly, relaxed teacher, takes you slowly through a handful of short yodels that are fun to learn. He repeats short sections and invites you to sing along. You can follow along in the book, but if you're learning to yodel in the car, as I was, that's not very practical. You can do it,though, because his instruction stands alone without the book. The second half, when Shirley Field takes over, is not nearly as effective. She sings a long, complicated yodel, then leaves you alone with the guitar to repeat it. The book doesn't really help, as it never gives you the whole yodel wtitten out like music, with the tune and words together. I found this second half frustrating. It would hve been easy to write them out clearly, or teach the long yodels in small sections. They keep saying her yodels are more complicated, and they are longer, but mostly, they're just not as well taught. However, when I get around to it, I will bring the CD into the house and try to learn her yodels, too.

This book is in two parts. The first part by Rudy Robbins is five stars. The second part by Shirley Field is one star--hence three stars overall. The first part by Rudy has the phonetic and normal/falsetto patterns written down plus songs to match the patterns. You can yodel right away and sound pretty good in ten minutes. The second part has no phonetics or vocal patterns. It has musical notes. I can listen to Shirley and try to mimic and guess that high notes on the scale are falsetto but it's a guess. You learn by mimicry more or less; not helpful. If the second part--the advance lessons--had the phonetics and vocal patterns written down too it would make it easier. Buy it for the first part which is very helpful for beginners.
