1.0 out of 5 stars Are you ready to be called crazy?
The author tells that God may talk with you - and a joke comes to mind:

If you talk to God it is called prayer and is found to be OK, even admirable at times.
If you tell God talks to you, you may be called insane and put in a funny farm.

At least to some there is that danger. So watch your steps.

The guru too was called crazy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Makes you confident to Talk to God, June 18, 2000
This review is from: How You Can Talk With God (Hardcover)
How you can talk with GOD shows a direct path to getting to know God and gives one the confidence that knowing God and being his favourite is not that difficult a deal. A must read for those who believe in Him and want to be in His good books.

The scientific way in which Sri Sri Paramhansa Yogananda explains the integrities of being able to talk to God, makes it easy for every one of us to feel that confidence of being so close to Him if we desire to. It makes you feel that you are actually in a position to talk to Him. And believe me, you can surely talk to Him the way Sri Sri Paramhansa Yoganandaji has explained. It has to work that way.

Respose from the Divine, is the only outcome of the way taught in this small book.

A must read for all those who actually want to talk to GOD and to be with him always.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond simple talking... to COMMUNING !, November 10, 2002
If you are new to Yogananda's writing, you may think that How You Can Talk with God is a presumptuous title. But if you have read his Autobiography of a Yogi, you know full well that this is no ordinary theoretical or inspirational author. He prayed almost unceasingly from infancy - meditated almost as early - and received RESPONSES from The Divine. Throughout his writings and in his SRF Meditation Lessons for his students Yogananda demonstrates the greatest faith in the truths he presents: he discourages students from accepting his words blindly and urges them instead TO TEST their validity in the laboratories of their own lives, meditations, prayers. This brief, to-the-point, power-packed book is no exception and is an excellent place to begin your exploration of Yogananda's brilliant writing and genuine love.

The fundamental thesis of How You Can Talk with God (HYCTWG) is displayed in its title: "...WITH God" not just "...to God." Like Saint Francis, Yogananda discerns prayer as TALKING to God and meditation as LISTENING to God; this book Yogananda explains how we need to develop BOTH these parts of our soul-Spirit relationship. The unique contribution of Yogananda's essay is to explain the power of classic yoga methods of meditation for clearing the mental static from our minds - and to introduce the power of the advanced Kriya Yoga methods that he continues to disseminate through Self-Realization Fellowship. Not everyone is ready for the discipline required by the advanced Kriya methods (described more fully in Yogananda's Autobiography), but everyone can benefit from the simple beginning-level instruction offered in HYCTWG.

If you will carry this small gem in your pocket or pocket-book with you and dip into it during moments of stress, confusion, or just apathy, I think you will find yourself increasingly drawn to practice its principles of scientific meditation and personal prayer. Hopefully, the reality of the promised benefits of even deeper communion will gradually tug at your soul's deepest needs and spur you to the next level of study. Then it's time to turn to the Autobiography or the instructions in HYCTWG for advanced Lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars A small book with a big message, May 1, 2003
By
This is a great book to own if you are already familar with Yoganada's works. I keep this in my bookbag so I have it wherever I go. A great read when you have some spare time at work or waiting in line. It's very small, but the message is HUGE. Yogananda has a great way of explaining how God, the metaphysical, and all life are interconnected and how YOU can achieve God-Realization.

I recommend first reading Autobiography of a Yogi. After reading that book, don't be suprized if you start picking up this jewel and others that he left us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for aspiring spiritual seekers!, June 29, 2005
This review is from: How You Can Talk With God (Hardcover)
It is a mistake to think that this book deals with lofty spiritual ideals. "How you can talk with God" is in fact a highly practical book. All those souls who doubt that it is possible to talk with God should read this book and apply the basic principles contained here.

Throughout history, there were many souls who revealed that it is possible to have a conversation with God. Recent examples are Yogananda, Neale Donald Walsh and other saints in India. An atheist may view this book with scorn but if one follows the teachings here, the so-called atheist would be having a daily conversation with God! God is indeed the most approachable and understanding being in the cosmos and by studying the life of the author, one will find that Yogananda was ALWAYS in conversation with the "Soul of souls". In short, this book is recommended to ALL spiritual seekers of ALL faiths.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile little book about communion with God, August 23, 2011
By
This super-short book by the master Paramahansa Yogananda is from 1957 (or before), so it is obviously not written in a modern style, and is thus not particularly readable.

However, this will not deter the reader interested in the book's spiritual content.

Yogananda informs us that he receives much of his knowledge from God rather than books since he seldom reads. He tells us that in the vibration of his cosmic energy God is talking all the time. Saints hear the voice of God.

But as far as "more ordinary mortals" are concerned (though none of us are actually ordinary but are all valuable), though God hears our prayers, He doesn't always respond. If we keep asking Him to respond, He will begin to give us gifts. But if we make it clear that it is not his gifts but Himself that we want, He will finally give us an answer. We may in a vision "see a face of some saintly being", or we may hear a Divine voice talking to us, and will know it is God. When our "heart-call" is intense and we do not give up, He will come. It is important that we remove from our mind all doubt that God will answer.

This is a worthwhile little book if you're interested in communion with God, though more modern alternatives exist, such as "How to hear the voice of God" by Susan Shumsky.

The guru too was called crazy at times. That is no secret. As Yogananda himself said, "We are all a little bit crazy and we don't know it."

1.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU DON'T STRIVE TO DO AS HE SAYS, YOU MAY GET SPARED, July 12, 2004
The guru inspired people to talk to God - in particular his "Divine Mother", the concept he most often used. The Hindu monk taught she would respond if -- -IF - - and then he gave the conditions. They included a 24 hours concentrated, uninterrupted vigil to implore God Mother to talk to you. Nearly nobody can stay "focused" like that - and besides there are degrees of uninterruptedness, and freakish teachings in other places too. Good yoga, by contrast, is based on letting go of the constructs by contemplating - going inwards mentally. That is a process that is violated by frantic begging for visions -

That sort of practice has unwholesome effects, as noted in more than one follower. One thing is the disappointement to harvest when God Mom does not deign to appear to talk with you - this time either, and so on - in a circus of dualism-based "guru help" in getting nowhere.

Some have gotten awfully disappointed, but only by taking him seriously! Others, religious folks, who just dip into the master's stuff, may get saved from very real dissappointments and embarrassments - enough to mar a monk, it seems.
