4.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, September 2, 2008
This review is from: How Do You Like It? (Audio CD)
Gerry and the Pacemakers were one of the essential groups to come from Liverpool in the 1960's. Like the Beatles, they were signed to EMI by George Martin, who was one of the producers of this, their first album. The key to their sound is Gerry Marsden's sound, a rich, thrilling, unsubtle tenor. The band had played in clubs in Hamburg, like the Beatles, which no doubt encouraged their tight, rhythm rich sound. In addition to the rocking numbers, there are two show tunes, Walk On from Carousel and Summertime from Porgy and Bess (I know, this is really an opera.). The producers added a string section to these selections, as Martin later did with the Beatles. Marsden's singing here is very winning, and I believe it was this version of Walk On that led it to become a favorite of British Soccer fans. My only reservation about the album is that the stereo cuts often switch into monaural when Gerry isn't singing. It sounds awkward, but the monaural takes are also here if the stereo technique is offputting. This is a prime CD of British Rock.
