Book Description

How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and on to Learnin April 2000
Carol Barnier knew that her son -- more likely to be sitting on the table (or the refrigerator) than in his chair -- was worthy of high expectations. She also knew that he could easily miss achieving them if she didn't find the right key to unlock his capacity to learn. Carol found volumes of information on how to recognize the challenges in ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) children, how to manage them, how to discipline them, and how to accept them. But no one told her how to teach her son math tomorrow. In her search for solutions, she developed techniques that are not only fun for all children, but highly successful with any child who struggles with focus.
~Creative reproducible activity aids that you'll want to use right away
~A phonics program where every lesson is a quick game kids will love
~Instuctional games, manipulatives, and motions that will help you work with, no against, your child's learning style
~Math strategies that make even a workbook fun
~Many more effective, fun solutions to the daily dilemma, "How do I teach my child tomorrow?"

The only available resource for teaching a child who struggles with focus. Includes reproducible games and activity guides.

More About the Author

I was born in Heidelburg, Germany to military parents who originally hailed from Ohio. While I've lived all over the place, we regularly reconnected with Ohio (Go Killbuck!) and it is clearly the place of my roots. I never planned to be a writer, yet when I look back, it seems I was constantly writing for something or other. In any case, I began writing officially (as in seeking to have a book published) when I searched for (and couldn't find) a book to help me teach my highly distractible ADHD first born child. After pulling together the information I needed and developing teaching methods that worked, (none of which, amazingly, involving duct tape) my husband put some of them onto a website. Requests for more began to flood in, and my first book was born. This seems to be my method. Live a few years. Ponder life's challenges. Write them down. Wa la! Instant book. So far, this has kept life interesting. If life ever becomes dull, I shall cease writing and take up knife juggling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuts and Bolts of Homeschooling an ADHD Child, August 14, 2000
By
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
I absolutely love this book! Carol Barnier is witty, creative, and knows exactly what it is like to have an ADHD child, because she wrote this book from her own experiences. It not only provides the compassionate understanding we all need as parents of ADHD children, but she gives you nuts and bolts info on HOW TO HOMESCHOOL an ADHD child. Carol explains how to teach every subject to a wiggly ADHD child using techniques that appeal to every learning style!

Oh, did I mention that Carol Barnier is a Christian and that this book is unashamedly Christian? She even has a section on "Sitting Still in Church".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, and fun resourse for Homschooling "hyper" children, April 9, 2001
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
My husband and I found this book when we were searching for answers when trying to decide if we should homeschool our son who we were being told that he may have ADHD. We wanted to homeschool because we were afraid of the school "giving up" on him. We were afraid to homeschool because if professional's could not teach my son how could I. I saw the title and thought this is my son. It has been a great resource. It gave my husband ideas on how to work with our son. The tips and insight the book offered has not only helped us to educate our son but also has helped me to understand where he is coming from and a little more about him. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is either considering homeschooling an ADD, ADHD or even just Hyper child, or if you even just want to tutor you child afterschool it will still be a vaulable reference.
