5.0 out of 5 stars Nuts and Bolts of Homeschooling an ADHD Child, August 14, 2000
By
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
I absolutely love this book! Carol Barnier is witty, creative, and knows exactly what it is like to have an ADHD child, because she wrote this book from her own experiences. It not only provides the compassionate understanding we all need as parents of ADHD children, but she gives you nuts and bolts info on HOW TO HOMESCHOOL an ADHD child. Carol explains how to teach every subject to a wiggly ADHD child using techniques that appeal to every learning style!

Oh, did I mention that Carol Barnier is a Christian and that this book is unashamedly Christian? She even has a section on "Sitting Still in Church".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, and fun resourse for Homschooling "hyper" children, April 9, 2001
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
My husband and I found this book when we were searching for answers when trying to decide if we should homeschool our son who we were being told that he may have ADHD. We wanted to homeschool because we were afraid of the school "giving up" on him. We were afraid to homeschool because if professional's could not teach my son how could I. I saw the title and thought this is my son. It has been a great resource. It gave my husband ideas on how to work with our son. The tips and insight the book offered has not only helped us to educate our son but also has helped me to understand where he is coming from and a little more about him. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is either considering homeschooling an ADD, ADHD or even just Hyper child, or if you even just want to tutor you child afterschool it will still be a vaulable reference.

Carol Barnier's book on homeschooling active children really struck a cord with me when I first read it. I had homeschooled just such a child and she really knew how it works. You don't have to be homeschooling a child with ADHD, however, to use this book--her teaching methods are just so much fun that any homeschooling parent will benefit from using them! This is a book that will make you fel good about yourself and your teaching, while showing you how to do more than just survive--you'll learn to have the time of your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!!, February 18, 2008

What a breath of fresh air! I have two ADD/ADHD kids. My first son was just put on meds for his complete inability to focu(ADHD/Inattentive). I wanted to give him ways to focus and stay on task but wasn't sure where to start. This book was full of terrific ideas. I just devoured it! I can't wait to implement some of these things in our routine. This book
provided many concrete ideas without all the fluff.

My second son is just downright ADHD and Ms. Barnier's descriptions were right on. I do actually let him sit on his desk and he has long since abandoned his chair. I really appreciated the discipline advice in this book. It was comforting to hear that #1. She's also found spanking ineffective (yet doesn't denounce it all together) #2. She is mindful of what triggers her son and can see the decline (we call it "meltdown mode"). And #3. It helped me to see that it's ok to intervene with those triggers and keep that boy on a short leash!!

Oh, and I also have to THANK Ms. Barnier for making this book an easy read!!! I was easily able to retain what I read while being distracted 100 million times from my highly distractable children...lol! Most of what I find on ADHD is so full of medical jargon and clinical study after study that it makes my brain hurt. Really, I haven't always been this way. I used to be smart..then I had children.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a blessing!, April 23, 2006
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
We saw Carol Barnier at a homeschool convention recently, she is an amazing (and hilarious) speaker and I love her books. My son is very wiggly and distratactable, it was nice to see that we are definatly not alone with our experience homeschooling a hyperactive child. Her suggestions are wonderful, practical, and encouraging. My favorite chapter is "seeing the gift in this child," it really gave me an appreciation for my son's unique talents and personality. I have never seen a book like this, I know it will be a valuable resource we will turn to often now and in the years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, September 12, 2009

Don't wait, don't pause, don't consider, just order this book now! My youngest child has severe emotional and learning issues and we pulled him out of school pretty suddenly because he was in crisis, so I didn't have much time to prepare for homeschooling. We de-schooled while I read like crazy, trying to get ready for this new adventure. This book was the first one to give me some real confidence and genuine hope that we could do this thing.

And guess what? We can! I knew immediately when I started reading Ms. Barnier's book that these ideas would capture my son's interest and they do. Just amazing. Turns out, my son loves to learn and enjoys a challenge, just as long as you don't ask him to sit in a chair with a pencil in his hand while he learns. If I ever meet Ms. Barnier, I'll give her a big ole' kiss for sure! The book is full of wonderful ideas for helping kids to get busy learning, but even better, it helped me start to think in a new way and create some of my own activities. Like the title of chapter 5 says, "there's a game in there somewhere", and so far it seems to be true. Another thing I really appreciate is that most of the ideas in the book can be implemented at minimal cost. These kiddos with ADHD and similar issues crave novelty and if I had to buy packaged games, manipulatives, etc., as often as my son craves new ones, we'd go broke in no time. I'm learning to create novel learning experiences with simple things: paper, pencils, paper clips, index cards, chalk, sticks and string, and, in some cases, nothing at all.

I saw Carol at a Homeschool Convention and the book covers her talk but in more detail and also gives a hard copy so as to make it easy to refer back to and remember. The book is good for all kinds of kids, not just ADHD. It's a great resource for the homeschool parent. It's also encouraging to know I'm not the only one who's kid has climbed on the refrigerator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this book, December 28, 2005
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
This book is a very encouraging and uplifting book. The author, having experience in raising and teaching a highly hyper-active child, is full of compassion and wisdom. If you're looking for encouragement in homeschooling or raising a special/hyperactive child, this book is a must-read. It encouraged me as well as helped me create some very exciting homeschooling ideas for my own ADHD child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and excellent speaker, March 30, 2011
This review is from: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On to Learning (Paperback)
This is a great book and an intelligent author. I saw her speak at a homeschool expo in St. Louis and she was funny, informative, and inspiring. She has a great story tell, many useful, PRACTICAL, reality-based tips to share, and she does in all in a light-hearted, fun way. I am so glad I choose her class at the expo and even bought the CD. :) The book is well worth the price.
