It is hard to express just how poorly this "book" is written. Just an example, the author makes a list of 10 things that you should ask a reference of a subcontractor, number 10 and number 3 are both the same. Later in the book, he will be in the middle of a discussion of subject A, and then start to talk about Subject B, in the same paragraph, without letting anyone know, and then two paragraphs later, switch back to subject A.

I bought this book based on another review that stated that about half way through the book, you the author suddenly changes tactics and lists how to build a house from the ground up. That was a terrible review of this book.

The brief description stated something to the effect of "first you need frost footers (which he did a lot of explaining of...) and then you build the foundation, walls, and then a roof, get it dried in, and finish the project" While that is a little over exaggeration, it is as useful as what the author wrote.

I have a hard time believing this book was even edited.

This is an odd little book. It starts out with some general information about general contracting, but about half way through--without warning--it digresses into a brief play-by-play account of the steps to building a new home! It is a very short book, so there is absolutely no way that anyone would read it and walk away with the confidence to hire a crew of subcontractors to build one.

However, I gave it 4/5 stars because it offers some very useful information for dealing with subcontractors. It also has an excellent glossary that contains many of the buzz words needed to help one master contractor-speak.

For its low cost, I don't regret buying it. Just be prepared for the aforementioned diversion!
