5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, April 27, 2000
This review is from: How to Be Your Own Veterinarian (Sometimes): A Do-It-Yourself Guide for the Horseman (Paperback)
I have had this book almost from the time it came out. It tells you how to see confirmation flaws, what they are, and how they can affect your horse. It gives common illnesses, what they are, how they are caused, symptoms, treatment, and sometimes long term care for the particular problem. It explains in great detail the structure of the foot, general guidelines on feeding, and most of the things that new or old horse people either need to know, or need to remember. An outstanding choice. I know that this book is sometimes offered through mail order tack catologs such as Jeffers or Stateline. I would never give mine up!

This book is great for diagnosing and often treating a horse without the need of a veterinarian. Easy reading with simple terminology, yet comprehensive and complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars How can you NOT have this book?!, January 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Be Your Own Veterinarian (Sometimes): A Do-It-Yourself Guide for the Horseman (Paperback)
Time and again, this book has helped me with problems, small and large. James writes in a straightforward, common sense way that inspires confidence and understanding. Easy to read, informative, comprehensive enough for most situations. Every time I pick it up, I am grateful to the very experienced horsewoman who first recommended it to me. A must have for any horse owner or horse owner wannabe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best reference book for the non-professional horse owner, December 31, 1998
This review is from: How to Be Your Own Veterinarian (Sometimes): A Do-It-Yourself Guide for the Horseman (Paperback)
This is the one book that stays out on the desk at all times. Dr. James has done very well at explaining the most common (and some not so common) problems thar arise as you care for your horses. I especially like the real down-to-earth advice on prevention and cures of common ailments. This is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A consummate guide for the horse owner, September 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Be Your Own Veterinarian (Sometimes): A Do-It-Yourself Guide for the Horseman (Paperback)
As a first time horse owner, and mine is a young colt at that, I needed detailed instructions on everything in the world to do with horses, their training, management, etc. I had bought 3 other books and paid a good bit more money for them than I did for this. All of them combined did not come even close to this one book. It was recommended to me by a breeder, farrier friend...he says it is his "bible". Not only does it cover everything you want to know about horses, but it also is written by a veterinarian, and she lets you know what you can do to make certain the veterinarian you have will respond immediately to your calls, etc. Wish I had found it before I bought all the other books.
