The full title says it all--no mechanical experience needed.,

A few years ago I bought a 12-year-old Prelude and found this book. With no mechanical experience, or aptitude, this book guided me through numerous repairs that I would never have dared try otherwise. It is well-written, and the writers even have a marvelous sense of humor. I would like to find such a book for the old Ford Ranger I'm driving now!

Greatest Auto Manual Ever!,
This review is from: How to keep your Honda alive: A manual of step by step procedures for the compleat idiot (Paperback)
I used this book to guide me in all the repairs and replacing the engine in my Honda Civic. Shocked the neighbors to see a 98 lb. girl pulling an engine! Since that time I have had my own auto repair business and have never seen another manual as good as this one.

Just happened to run across this listing while browsing. In the mid-80's I was able to overhaul my Civic's engine with no knowledge of auto mechanics whatsoever. It's so well written and the diagrams are excellent. It's too bad that there wasn't a book like this published for every make and model of car. It's also quite funny. It includes a recipe for baking a chicken on top of your engine.

Worth it for the illustrations alone,

My first copy of this book got me through oil changes, replacing ball joint, basic tuning, etc. on my Honda Civic. I highly recommend it if you have an old, old Civic. That copy got all slathered with motor grease, torn, and eventually disappeared. So I was excited at a library book sale to pick up a used copy -- not for repairs, but for its incredible illustrations, by Peter Aschwanden et al. It is a classic of its style -- completely over-the-top (meaning, far far better than needed for a repair manual), ornate but in an intelligent way, drawn with engineering precision (and 100% clear as technical illustrations), with an assortment of animals in Japanese garb shown helping out with repairs. I'm not sure where his style comes from, but for me the explosive detail has shades of a psychedelic, hippie, maybe "underground comics" aesthetic. But it is all 100% crisply and professionally executed. Truly superb. If you are an art lover or artist, especially someone who leans toward scientific illustration, I highly recommend it for the sheer beauty and clarity of the drawings.
