The best and least expensive phonics program known to man,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Tutor (Paperback)
I used Alphaphonics to teach my children how to read when they were 4 and 5 years old. It was thorough, VERY easy to use, and worth every penny (and there weren't very many of them needed!). "How to Tutor" is indeed the same thing-different format-and every bit as excellent. I used Mr. Blumenfeld's ideas on teaching cursive )included in this book. I strongly recommend to anyone, buy "How to Tutor" and save your money for those reading books for your children, when before you know it, they'll be reading them, thanks to Mr. Blumenfeld's book. It really IS all that's needed. For all of you who are insecure about teaching your child to read, use this and be encouraged, your child is teachable, especially by you. Just take the lessons in this book and write them on a chalkboard and discuss it with your student (great, by the way, for teaching those of any age who never really learned to read properly) Have you gotten the idea that I REALLY like this book? Don't let the price fool you, you CAN get great stuff cheap.

A Word from the Author,
By Samuel L. Blumenfeld (Waltham, Massachusetts USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Tutor (Paperback)
The original edition of Alpha-Phonics is now once more in print and is available at Amazon.com. However, How to Tutor teaches more than just reading. It teaches the three Rs: Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic. I wrote it to enable parents with little money to be able to teach their children the basic primary subjects at home. It's simple and easy to use. Because I have been critical of the way public schools teach children the basics, I decided to provide parents with a way to do the job properly at home so that they could be sure that their children learned the basics before going to school. I also recommend that you consider homeschooling. My book, Homeschooling: A Parents Guide to Teaching Children is a comprehensive introduction to the wonderful and exciting world of homeschooling. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

Great book I used to teach three kids to read so far!,

Happily I located this book through The Paradigm Company (now in its 17th printing.) We created a race track with a prize for each time around the track, representing 12 lessons. Ten times around the track and YOU CAN READ!!! Our seventh grade daughter just scored 13.5 grade level in language with the foundation provided by this book. My first copy fell apart after three children, so I tracked down a new copy to teach my fourth child to read. It's great

Best book available for teaching reading & writing together.,

I have used this book recently in a summer tutoring program. The children I worked with needed remedial help and did quite well with the simple lessons. Previously, I had used it to tutor children who were behind for their age group. I recommend it for families on a very low budget who are planning to home school. It's like Ragu. It's all in there and you don't need much else other than your Bible.

I've used this book with my homeschooling children and it is super easy, not time consuming at all and superior to all other programs we've tried! I would highly suggest it to anyone teaching their own or tutoring other children, especially those on a budget.

I used this book to teach several of my younger siblings to read while still in my teens. My mom used this book for me as well. We all have gone on to do very well in reading comprehension scores in tests. It's a wonderful book, and I'm looking forward to being able to use it for my own children in a year or two now.

Easy to follow. Great for homeschooling, teaching others to read, math, and cursive. Can be a wonderful tutor for after school work. Can be used for teaching others and gives pointers for helping you start your own tutoring class in your home or at your local school.

This book was recommended to me by a co-owner of a million-dollar company that tutors students for SAT testing. he suggested it'd be a good way for me to get into tutoring from a place of never having tutored before. i bought the book & while i have not read it in it's entirety, i've read enough to know that this book will be my primary bible. the book is older (2nd edition - 1985) & although i am not an expert in the field of education & i haven't had a chance to ask my education friends about this, the author breifly prefaces his philosophies w/what may seem like outdated criticisms of primary education models from the 70's/80's, which may or may not be in existence today. however, this does not discount the fact that he's got the right methods in mind & the wherewithall to instruct you how to teach. he is very clear on how to encourage a child, pacing the child comfortably - this is spelled out very well. then he enters into lessons, hundreds of them on reading, writing & math. i've not ever tutored before, but i have a good sense of chronological order & i have the patience to instruct. this book is laid out perfectly for my understanding. i am looking forward to tutoring children & this book will be my first, if not only, guide.
