The best ones are the cover versions, November 25, 2004
This review is from: Howard Carpendale - Seine Grossen Erfolge (Audio CD)
My core musical interest is in the unmatched decade from 1967 to 1977 which was the peak of progressive rock (Beatles,Doors,Focus,Genesis,Gong,MoodyBlues,Nektar,Pink Floyd,YES,etc) and Soul music (Ashford+Simpson,BarryWhite,Gladys Knight,Millie Jackson, etc). But I'm open to many other styles like French (Aznavour), Italian, Spanish, Arabic chansons, Hard Blues (GaryMoore,Joe Satriani), Metal (AxelRudiPell,AC/DC), and also German folk songs (Schlager). More than in other languages, a lot of German Schlagers are cheesy ballads (Schnulzen), but it is worth the effort to pick out the pearls. To save you hours of fruitless listening in cd shops, the BestOf compilations of Alexandra (died in 1969),
Udo Juergens (Aber bitte mit Sahne I+II), Costa Cordalis, Roland
Kaiser, and Peter Maffay (Nach 30 Jahren) are all worthwile.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing of the cd under review: Too much cheese, some Ok but not really captivating songs
(Dann geh doch), and only Tuer an Tuer mit Alice, Ti amo,
Laura Jane which are strong (the first two are cover versions of
Smokie and some Italian guy). I'm afraid that's too little for
a Bestof cd.
