THIS CD RULES,
By Greg (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly (1996 Original Cast) (Audio CD)
I personally love this cd, though i am not gay. All of the songs are good, something you rarely find in a newer musical (for instance: Jekyll and Hyde) and all the actors are great. I especially like the one who sings the Torch songs. Some of the funniest songs are "You've Got To Stay In The Game" which has the male actors dressed up as singing and dancing playing cards, "Not All Man" which has a centaur who doesn't realize he is a centaur wondering "Why do they say I'm not all man?", and especially the Carol Ann Knippel skit, a struggling small-town musical theatre lover, who runs the Melody Barn, and decides to write her own musicals. "Annie 3" cracks me up. "Be a cockeyed oculus! Whistle a happy song! Everythings comin' up....Crysanthemums!" Overall I'd say this is one of my new favorite shows, and you should buy it RIGHT NOW, and if you like this one, buy WHOOP-DEE-DOO!, also conceived by Crabtree, but clearly not as good as WHEN PIGS FLY, though very good as well.

I saw a live production of this show in Phoenix, and this CD is the perfect way to keep my memories of that vibrant evening alive! What a tremendous creative effort this represents, and what an affirming and incredibly funny triumph it is for gay folks everywhere! Buy it -- you won't be sorry!

A Raucous Romp,

I saw this show off broadway four years ago and it was absolutely fabulous. I laughed, I cried, and laughed some more. The more I reminisce, the more outrageous the show became. Mostly laughed . . . out loud . . . a LOT. The lyrics are unquestioningly imaginative. And the music never ceases to lift my spirits. The whole production allowed me to celebrate being gay in a way I've never experienced before. I was profound proud to be queer. And I still cherish that feeling.

Witty, imaginative, thought provoking, humable- in a word unforgetable. The world lost a brilliant talent with the death of Howard Crabtree. An of course big Bravos to Dick Gallagher and Mark Waldrop and the entire cast. I can't say which is my favorite number because all of them are great, but special mention to The title number, Laughing Matters, and Sam and Me. Get this cd - you won't be disappointed.

One of the cleverest shows ever! It's hilarious! The performances are superb, the voices excellent! There is nothing negative I can say about this cd. It is one of my all time favorites, and I still bust out laughing after listening to it hundreds of times. You will, too!
Don't miss Howard's other show, Whoop-de-doo! It's fantastic, too!

I saw this musical at the Orlando Fringe Festival two years ago. It was pared down for time so there are a few songs here I didn't see in the show, but it's a lot of fun. The songs and dialogue snippets are witty.
The only caveat I would say is that the costumes make up part of the show so a bit of the humor of the show isn't present. The songs are great but some of them are even funnier when you see the cast decked out. One example is the song "You've Got To Stay In The Game" and the four actors are dressed like the 4 queens from a deck of cards, each corresponding to each of the 4 suites. This show is great to listen to, but run and see it if a theater near you is performing it.

You don't need to see the show in order to appreciate this cast recording. Although, one should see the show, cause what the cd lacks is the ability to show you Howard Crabtrees clever and creative costumes. Nevertheless this definitely is a MUST HAVE.

"When Pigs Fly" is a great soundtrack which allows the listener to fully enjoy his/her heritage and lifestyle as a gay person. The music reminds you of the struggles and immense fun that you can have as a gay person in the 90's. I reccommend this soundtrack for ANYONE who enjoys being themselves and being a part of a universal brotherhood of mankind. The lyrics in this musical will make you chuckle, laugh, and yes reflect on your own life. You will marvel at the play-on-words which run rampant throughout this recording. If you buy this cd you will not be disappointed! So sit back and listen as you're taken to a world where it's ok to be gay, as long as you are true to yourself. Enjoy.
