Book Description

June 1994
The attractive town of Caxley became prosperous through its connection with the wool trade, and on market day it is a hive of activity as the townspeople and neighboring villages from Fairacre, Beech Green, and Bent come to shop, chat, and watch the world go by. Families have lived here for generations, but it is the story of the Norths and the Howards in particular that is told in this delightful book. "The Howards of Caxley begins on a fine May morning in the fateful year of 1939, and follows the path of two families and the little town through the Second World War, towards hope for happier times ahead.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

The sense of history here is that of common people living in small town England. There are no extravagances with Miss Read, just the sadnesses and pleasures of living. The story tells of three generations of two interwoven families, the Norths and the Howards, and of WWII. Wonderfully detailed, THE HOWARDS OF CAXLEY, brings the listener back to more sensible times, quieter times, more thoughtful times. June Barrie does a charming and memorable job with the people and plots in this gentle narration. The characters are marvelous--this listener would enjoy knowing both these families. As an escape from the violence and confusion of the 21st century, this is a delightful listen. 3.0 out of 5 stars This is a fine story if you love the English village life, July 2, 2007

This review is from: The Howards of Caxley (Hardcover)
Miss Read invites us to a sleepy village quite far from London -- or wait, is it really sleepy? As the story unfolds at a leisurely pace, we discover that the usual emotions seethe beneath the surface. Septimus is a fine, wise pater familias, although his high principles may hurt a few of his struggling family members. Edward, the nephew, clearly deserves the patrimony because of his humilty, strength, and essential goodness. Sigh.
