garage pop with a lot o' heart,
By
This review is from: Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Audio CD)
Let me just say, that i am kind of anal when it comes to music. i am a huge music nerd, and i scramble to pick up all sorts of old records. and with new music, i am even more of a finicky shopper. but this band....just won me over with it's heart! i hear comeback...and the song felt so familiar...not in a "hackneyed" way, but like something from childhood. The vocal styling sometimes recalls Stephen Malkmus at his most friendly ("i'm a reasonable man"). This band is just comforting and gentle without being boring. And the counter-harmony's on "track and a train" are just heavenly.
a few quick reasons i love this band... 1)moog! 2)honesty, lack of pretentiousness 3)warmth of production and content 4)incredibly nerdy but....i think bebban stenborg could be the potential bearer of my progeny. any lady who weilds a moog is fair game for me. so...in my opinion, if you enjoy the garage stylings of pavement, weezer, or ben kweller, the earnesty of deathcab for cutie, the more lighthearted velvet underground, the boy/girl hamonies of stereolab....i recommend this album.

It's a great album,

Although the album omits a few great songs from the various EPs the Shout Out Louds have put out, it is still fantastic. To refrain from employing the phrase "catchy" the band is down right good, and the songs are loveable. You'll find yourself tapping your fingers to the opening track, bobbing around joyfully to the second, and building on your musical elation until you are dancing like no one is looking when "Hurry Up" plays on your preferred media player. If "Please Please Please"--possibly the albums climax--didn't already do that. Of course the album settles you down into a mellow state of Swedish bliss with the last two tracks. Not to mention, the Scandanavian Jam session the album finishes with is superb.
I suggest this album be purchased. It is good.

Okay...I'm consulting my How To Write A Snobby Indie Review handbook and it says that I must start by namedropping. Um...Unicorns...that's the first band that comes to mind when I think of Shout Out Louds. And maybe the Strokes (or any other recent NYC garage band), but not quite as mainstream. Of course, for the really pretentious I should mention that the band is Swedish, and this album is similar to the other pop that's been coming out of that country for years.
I saw one guy write that this album is "just" another pop album, but what's the harm in that? Pop is still the purest form of music, and the Beatles and Beach Boys were more than content to make good pop music for years. That guy must be a high school kid who hasn't realized that pop is back in. Howl Howl Gaff Gaff is not actually a pop "album." It's a collection of singles that were previously released in the band's native country, so there's a bit of variety to the songs and no smooth feel to the album. Ultimately, this album won't change your life and it may not become one of your favorites of all time, but it's hard not to enjoy the simple pleasures here. "The Comeback" is without question the best song and it's a good representation of the rest of the album, so give that a listen...if you enjoy that you'll probably enjoy the rest. (Or if you enjoy the Unicorns, Islands, or any other lo-fi, indie pop band).

The Shout Out Louds are just fantastic. I saw them live at Coachella last month and they were utterly charming and disarming. The album is a good representation of their live sound with nary a poor song. With the right promotion and support, this could be one of THE albums of the summer.
Way to go, Sweden--first ABBA now this. Perfect pop all around.

After Giving Howl Howl Gaff Gaff a good listen, I quickly fell in love. This CD puts a smile on my face. It's wonderfully catchy and has this great versatility about it. There's slow songs, there's up-beat and they're all unique in their own way. It's not deep--just lovely, all around fun music. I have yet to come across a song I dislike. It's great to sing along to in the car and just about everywhere. Definately a CD to check out.

I must admit, at first I didn't like this CD. But after listening to it several times, it grew on me. It was certainly not anything I had ever listened to and it opened up new doors to different music and must say I'm glad I bought this CD. :D

From start to finish this is one of the best album's i've bought in 2005. A great mix of up tempo, rock and slow songs that is sure to please anyone who buys it.
My favorites are Very Loud, Oh Sweetheart, Go Sadness. I admit, I generally don't buy CD's, but this is the first I can actually be proud to spend my money on.

This cd smacks you square center of your face with "The Comeback," and does not stop. Songs like "Please Please Please" and "100*" only compliment the Shout Out Louds more. If your tired unoriginal music this will be your fix for a long time. Check out the forthcoming album coming to the U.S. September 11, 2007.
