5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Debut, July 25, 2006
This review is from: Howling Bells (Audio CD)
First of all, the Howling Bells are not a goth band. The instrumentals are excellent, but what really shines through is the lead singer's vocals really shine through on tracks such as "Low Happening" and "Setting Sun"

5.0 out of 5 stars Mort, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Howling Bells (Audio CD)
This album has a sophistication and well rooted composition not often heard these days. It draws from long appreciated and a strong base of influence that has served the development of these artists' genre.
You may not be ready for this album. It's the quintessential " you gotta play it a couple of times " album before you get it, but when you do, you'll be humming " broken bones " involuntarily.
If you read reviews, set aside the repetative notion that makes comparison to PJ harvey or dark gothic representation. You'll see and feel the light that they bring to the table. If you like Neil Young, the depth that Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits can surface, the warmth and familiarity of Cherl Crow, with the clarity and conviction of Alecia Keys, all in an unassuming, outside the box, art that these Australians have crafted, do yourself a favor, put a copy in your collection and one in your car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Howling Bells Rock, June 28, 2008

This review is from: Howling Bells (Audio CD)
I saw them perform Setting Sun on London Live and was instantly hooked so I went over to Youtube to check out some of their songs. This is an amazing debut album up there with the likes of Oasis, Coldplay, The Strokes, etc - in terms of quality of debut. Every song on it is fantastic and you can listen to the album all the way through. Some songs will take more time to grow on you but you will not be disappointed. I am surprised this has not made it to the U.S.

Worth every penny, can't wait for their next one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Stellar Debut!!!!, January 23, 2007
This review is from: Howling Bells (Audio CD)
I really love this album now. Someone else said it before me, but you really do have to listen to it a couple of times. I started listening to it one day, but didn't give it much attention. Then I put it into a playlist with a bunch of stuff that I was really into at the time, and all of a sudden, I couldn't go without listening to this album. It really is an amazing piece of work! I am completely surprised at how much I like listening to it. I would wear out the disc if I hadn't put the songs on my computer to listen to. I don't quite agree with them being classified as "dark gothic", so it really shouldn't be taken into consideration. Just buy this cd. It is great!!!
