Now one has to admit this, although Subpop are changing their musical styles with the outsider sensibilities of Iron and Wine, the College pop of The Shins and the weirdy-beardy folk of Ugly Casanova, they really excel at finding garage-rock bands, and The Catherers are a testament to this.

The Catheters are in essence as dirty ass as dirty ass rock can get. There is enough bluster in these 33 minutes to destroy a small village and kill every living thing in sight. This music is so filthy that you can practically smell the greasy locks of the band. Needless to say that `Howling...' (their third album) is a load of fun and I'm not surprised if you'll start growing hair (albeit with dandruff) on your chest after a couple of listens. Buy, headbang and play your guitar to the max! This is what albums like this were made for.

I like this album especially since it plays more on the post alternative rock side with a sense of old punk. If you are a fan of the Vue or Carlsonics, this is for you. I give the album 4 stars appropriately restricted to the genre.

As the 1990s gave way to the early 2000s: Filthy, dirty garage-rock that murders your speakers. Sub Pop released some great rock records during this time: Love As Laughter, Vue, The Murder City Devils, The Yo-Yos, Arlo, the Hellacopters. This 2004 album is definitely a product of the times. Shouted verses and choruses, trashy guitars and stomping drums a la The Stooges. While not as immediately satisfying as its predecessor, Static Delusions and Stone-Still Days, this record's kerrang! grows on you, and has aged well. Evokes a time when rock was revved-up R&B, the philosophical rallying cry was "Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom!" and words like "beat combo" were used. Highlights include "No Natural Law," "Reaction," and "Brave Drum" but the best song is, surprisingly, the closer, "We Are So Cold," a feedback-infused, ear-ringing ruckus. Could you describe the ruckus, sir? I think I've said enough. Sadly, "Howling...It Grows & Grows" was their last album and the band ended on Oct 15, 2004.
