Book Description

Ten years without daylight. Everything they knew was a lie. A society of children in the ancient far north live underground - and their lives are about to change.

Woven into dreams and secrets lies a hidden prophecy - their quest for freedom comes at a staggering cost. Worse, three children are fated for the Hringur, a leadership ring required to reclaim their homeland. The problem is, no one wants to be in it.

An intelligent boy with not enough on his mind, Anders makes stunning mistakes as he is bedeviled by dreams of his missing father and the unwelcome news that he might have something called natural leadership.  As his level-headed sister Sissel works to solve a mystery, her determination flares into daring acts of courage as they uncover shocking truths behind the prophecy.

Runes, myths, and legends collide as Anders and Sissel find themselves facing the evil that once ruined their land. They will risk everything - but even the sagas cannot help them now.

Editorial Reviews

"An enchanting and well-written YA fantasy novel that will appeal to adults and children alike. It is highly inventive and imaginative, with clear, crisp writing and an engaging tone." -Darla Ortiz, LibraryThing

"One of the more intriguing YA books I've read in a long while. The world building was amazing--I really felt like I was underground in the caverns with the kids and felt the rush of going 'above ground.' The premise is so original...I can't think of any other book I've read (or even heard of) that is like it." -Claire Middleton, Goodreads

"From the underground world, to the stories in the books, the runes (and the cool way they showed up on my Kindle!), and the poems and the secret twists...this book was a wonderful experience and should not be missed by fans of YA fantasy." -Anabella Johnson, LibraryThing

"Fast pace feel with the short chapters and numerous plot twists that kept me engaged from start to finish...vivid descriptions...I was inside the story from the very beginning. I was happy to see that there is a sequel available (or coming soon)." -Samantha Ryan, Goodreads

"The writing was fantastic...really beautiful prose that kept me entranced for hours." -Nicole Hastings, LibraryThing

"I adored all the characters." -Jhonni Parker, Goodreads

The Howling of Wind (Tales of Yggdrasil) by Sig Nilsson is an original and engaging YA fantasy novel about the survivors of a devastating battle that destroyed their village, and their daring plan to take it back. Forced to live underground for a decade, the Four Mothers, raise the children in a stern and somber environment that is cloaked in secrecy. As the story of that dark and ruinous night unfolds, magical and tender transformations occur, while at the same time, the tension of what lies ahead, continues to build. Young Ander's questions and dreams, and his sister, Sissel's daring acts, inspire and soften the elders and transform their dark underground world into a community of hope, common purpose, and unexpected bravery. The Nordic wisdom words at the beginning of each chapter and the mystery of the runes and crystals add much to the story. The language is well crafted and moves the story forward at a good pace. The characters feel real and worthy of rooting for. From the first page, I was drawn into their world, like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, feeling the dampness of the caverns, hearing the water pouring over the water wheel, and the palpable, mounting tension of the final battle. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
