Whether or not you need a UV/Protecting filter on your expensive glass is a topic that is debated endlessly on photographic forums. There are those who think that it is silly to put a cheap piece of glass in front expensive glass (it can only reduce the contrast/quality of the picture right?). And there are others who think that it is a lot better to scratch/get dirty/lick(?) a cheap piece of glass than a $2000 lens.
Either way, as far as filters go, the Hoya HD filters are really nice. They are multi-coated and easy to clean. Unlike the cheap filters out there, they are made of real glass. And if you are somewhat brave, they can be had for somewhat decent prices from sellers in HK. Definitely worth getting. I have several of them (including 2 at the 77mm filter size)

I know this is a pricy filter, however, the first filter I got with my 24-105mm f/4L canon lens had a noticeable negative impact on the quality of my pictures. The first filter was free with the purchase of the lens. I guess you get what you pay for! I have not noticed and significant impact to the pictures with this filter, well worth the extra money to protect your lens.

I use this baby on my 17-55mm f/2.8g and on my 70-200 f/2.8 also and it is a wonderful filter. It does a nice job preventing glare in your photos. It also serves as a protector for your lens and cleans so easily. I never take mine off, unless I am shooting at night. Hoya's HD (Hardened Glass) filters are really the cream of the crop. Doesn't get any better than this.

I've owned many lens protectors, uv filters, and polarizers in the past. None come close to the quality and feel of this one. Over the course of a year my other lens protectors would get micro scratches on the glass making them unusable. The HOYA is going on 4 months and not even a finger print. We put it on our new 50mm f/1.2 lens as soon as it came out of the box and it's done its job perfectly. Glass is clear and doesn't add any aberrations, flare, tint, hue or distortion. This is the kind of glass you want in front of a $2000 + lens. Your lens is only as good as the filter in front of it. Buy the best the first time and save yourself buying 4 junk filters over a few years and possibly damaging your camera. I had a tiffen on a 17-40mm canon L lens and dropped it. The filter was twice as thick as the hoya but completely destroyed the filter and cracked the first optical glass of the lens. I believe if i had the hoya i wouldn't have had to repair the lens at all. Ordering a second HD filter for the new 70-200mm L IS ii USM we just got.

I bought this baby to protect my newly purchased (and expensive)Canon 70-200 2.8 IS 2 USM. I feel very comfortable having this filter on the nose of this baby. The lens glass will never see air due to the fact that I will never take this filter off. I love this filter!(along w/my various other Hoya filters).Hoya makes a great product.

if you want save extra $10 look for Kenko Zeta on E B A Y, exactly the same, only with 7 coating layers instead of 8. Both are made in the same factory one is for international market Hoya, the other for Japan, Kenko.
Enjoy.

Possibly, some other manufacturer is out there who can match the quality of the Hoya filters, but I defy anyone out there who can tell me who that might be.

Great filter! As good as it gets in my opinion. Clear with no negative effect on images and no ghosting or flare. What more could you want!

Is there really a difference, from a standard $10 UV filter, to a semi pro filter for $50, to a HD glass? Simply said YES! It is like an allergy commercial where everything is so much clearer, no distortion, no mist, just crystal clear. I have in my collection standard Canon UV filters (I no longer use), to pro digital filters (this is semi pro), that are on my cheap lenses. If you want to take advantage of all the capability of your glass, this is the way to go.
