Hoyle 2004 Card Games OK,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hoyle Card Games 2004 (CD-ROM)
Hoyle Card Games 20004 is OK and I got around its "Insert CD" while playing by using Alcohol 120% (version 1.4.8) putting it in a virtual drive. Now my only real beef with it, is you cant change the background when playing Crazy Eights. The Hoyle Bucks(I used a cheat) and Facemaker is neat. If you dont like having to put a CD in all the time, get Hoyle Card games 2003-its basically the same game, just without the "insert CD". Odd though, I still play a 1996 Hoyle Cards version, which except for a minimum 4 players in every game, is still far superior to the 2000 generations, IMO.

Better than I thought,

This review is from: Hoyle Card Games 2004 (CD-ROM)
I have the other versions of these Hoyle games, mainly I got new ones because they had new games. This one did not so I avoided buying it.I got the puzzle games and hated it because of the display style everything seems to tiny and you can't make it more full screen like you could in the old versions. I was really hesitent to buy this but I did anyway. I am enjoying it. The "Hoyle Bucks" makes the game more interesting as you try to do certain things to make the money plus collect the backrounds and such. (now you are "paying" for card back and backrounds that used to be "free") I like the talk back feature. There have always been characters I wish I could tell off and now I can ;). If that gets old I can always turn them off. So if you are new to Hoyle Card Games then get this. If you have previous versions then only get if you have the extra money or these features sound tempting to you and you dont mind having to have the cd in the drive to play.

Poker Programming,

I really like the Hoyle card games, especially Spades, Hearts, and Gin Rummy. However, the Poker game is not at all realistic. Whoever wrote the paramaters evidentally knows absolutely nothing about poker probalities.I do not play it often, but played two games tonight. In one game there were SIX times that a player got four of a kind! Twice it was four aces! The probabalities of that is somewhere two million to one. I would surely like to see you issue an upgrade to this game to make it more realistic. Sincerely, Thomas Wall

Have they added passing to pinochle yet?,
By
This review is from: Hoyle Card Games 2004 (CD-ROM)
I have Hoyle Card Games 5, and enjoy it, but the Pinochle implementation does not include passing cards. That's the only reason I see to upgrade, so it would be a waste of money if it doesn't add that...Update: I recently inquired on the Hoyle forums, and the response was that Hoyle games follow Hoyle's Book of Rules and passing isn't in there, so it won't be in the game. I think they need to update their book, as everyone I know passes cards in pinochle, but there you have it...

Better than earlier editions,
By Jackie (Arizona, USA) - See all my reviews

This version is updated from my earlier edition and I really enjoy it. I haven't liked the voices on either edition so I love having the option to turn them off. I have literally spent hours playing this game and I've taught myself card games I'd never played before.

My husband and I are enjoying these Hoyle card games very much. We especially like pinochle. We grew up playing cards which most people now adays don't do. The play station and nintendo games do not interest us. We are senior citizens and like the traditional card games.

Lousy,

I bought this to replace an earlier version of Hoyle Card Games because the CD was getting a little worn out. Ugh. The "improved" graphics are lousy and juvenile, the game play is slow, and many of the features and options in the previous edition are completely missing. This is a complete waste of money.

I can't evaluate the quality of the games since I was not able to get this software to work on my three month old DELL Windows XP Professional machine. After loading the software, you are still required to have the CD in the computer each time you play. When trying to play, my CD ROM drive would grind away and eventually (1-2 minutes later) show a slick introduction screen and then freeze. Needless to say, I'm disappointed.
