5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn board games.
This works just as well as promised.

Yes, the graphics are a bit clunky, but it's a great way to learn board games, as well as play by oneself.

HINT: Copy the DVD contents to your hard drive, and you don't need to load the disc each time you want to play.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pass On 2009
If you already have the 2008 version, stick with that and forget about this 2009 version. If you don't have 2008, buy that instead of 2009. The only new games are some Big Bang games, and they are hardly enough to recommend this "update". You are forced to play with a snarky little Geni (I guess that is what he is), and these classic games are neither particulary interesting or engaging. One additional problem is that the CD is a little buggy (some stuttering and the "orange" screen of death after playing for a while). There is nothing new here to recommend this 2009 version.

This program is just "OK". I actually don't like it as well as my 2005 version, but was told that 2005 wouldn't work with Vista and sooner or later I'm going to have to upgrade to Vista.
I don't think they have much improved the program at all. They have added a game or two and the "Big Bang" games are fun but not to many of them in the game, at least that I like to play.
Not sure I'd have bought it had I know what ie was like. Most of the interface on this one is pretty much like the 2005 version I already had.

After a long wait for fresh game as it stands this game is stale same content except for the online games. The BIG BANG was a whisper, even after all fans of Hoyle was asked for ideas none was followed. Next year I might pass on Hoyle. Even with the on line games the game is not worth buying, maybe the card and casino games will be better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment and Major Bugs, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 [Old Version] (DVD-ROM)
I have owned previous versions of the Hoyle games and was excited to use the 2009 version with my new Vista laptop. Unfortunately, it crashes at times and causes problems with my system. Also, there are major bugs. I love to play Parchisi. It takes several tries for the game to allow me to place my piece where I want it to be. Sometimes, it automatically places the piece where it chooses and you can't undo the move. I've uninstalled it from my computer and I'm considering purchasing the 2008 version. Do not purchase this version. I will trust the other reviewer who recommends purchasing the 2008 version.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok - very much like the 2005 version, December 12, 2008

Well the product I received was clearly opened already. I assume returned. The packaging was bent up. But I figured for the price, it is just a disc.. try it anyway. The disc didn't look scratched up. It seems to work fine. It is VERY close to the same as the 2005 edition with a few more games. But for the games you play on previous editions it will look and sound exactly the same. Overall I am fine with it. I have NOT had any crashings or freezing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars For a Newcomer to Hoyle, this is GREAT!, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 [Old Version] (DVD-ROM)
Guess I just emerged from the gaming Stone Age, because I LOVE many of these games unlike all the other reviews. Not exactly battlemechs and Sid Meier's Pirates!, but I bought it to play simple games on my little Acer, this is the first multi-game software I bought that is worthy.

Started with Battle Ships, that was a hooh, Backgammon was pretty good, Bump! is a bit slow but fun, Time Breaker and Pacer Racer are fun like arcade games of old, then you have the really good stuff like the Maze Raider, and brain racker like Rummy Squares, that last one got to be real good "mind trainers" for kids. Many more I still haven't try, this thing is so good I played it on the desktop (where there are more versatile games) instead of just when I am away (with my Acer).

The best thing about this software, is that it does not need CD to run, what a concept!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2008, April 8, 2009

These Hoyle games by Encore are supposed to play on Vista machines, but they do only about 10% of the time. It would appear that Encore took over from Sierra, which may be why the quality has gone down. If you have Vista do not chance buying these games. I've tried the Puzzle & Board, the Card, the Casino, and the Mind Quiz Games on three different Vista computers. The result was identical on all three computers, except that on two of them the games did not work at all. The games are so sporadic that I gave up and removed them.

Bottom line; don't waste your money unless you are running Windows XP.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average Game, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 [Old Version] (DVD-ROM)
There are really no new games in this release, but the games work fine. The design has no thought to it, the main menu is just a list in alphabetical order, that really disappointed me because the previous versions of Hoyle have at least done something interesting with the main menu pages. Overall, not worth the money if you have a previous version.

I'm running this on an HP desktop computer with Windows 7 and it has performed faultlessly. I purchased this to replace the 2008 version which was lost when I moved. I have tried most of the games which were on the 2008 version but have not tried the new games. I thought I had lost Mahjong and Slide Tiles but found that they are under Tile Games on the main menu. I do appreciate the option to change tile faces because I think that the Egyptian face is bolder and easier to see.
