4.0 out of 5 stars Computer gamer
This is a good quality game and it's played a lot in our household. We play one-person "Mahjong" very often here (maybe too often?) and everyone from the adults to the 8 year old is hooked on this particular game. There's a two person version as well, but it's not as big of hit in our household. The graphics on the tiles are detailed, so this may not be a...

When we switched from a Mac system to a PC system, I needed to replace the Eric's Ultimate Solitaire that I had enjoyed on the former system. Because Eric's isn't available, I replaced it with Sierra's Hoyle Solitaire and Mahjong Tiles, the best I thought available. Boy was I wrong! This is a good quality game and it's played a lot in our household. We play one-person "Mahjong" very often here (maybe too often?) and everyone from the adults to the 8 year old is hooked on this particular game. There's a two person version as well, but it's not as big of hit in our household. The graphics on the tiles are detailed, so this may not be a game for laptop size screens, but works just fine on regular larger monitors. You've also got the option to choose different tile graphics and layouts, which might help. One reason we purchased it is so that it could be played both on the Mac and the MS PC and it does that well. It has some fun sounds as the tiles are matched and removed. If you have the CD in, you get the sounds. Without the CD, no cute sounds, but the game goes faster, so it depends on what you want. I like the quality, the flexibility, and the challenge of the Mahjong game offered in this CD.

Sierra's Hoyle Solitaire DOES NOT HAVE FEATURES/OPTIONS that are available on other software (not only Eric's Ultimate):

NO "AUTOPLAY", so every card must be clicked and dragged even when winning is definite;
NO "RETRY GAME" - you get one chance and that's it;
NO "HINTS";
"UNDO" is good for only one play;
NO "FLYING CARDS" option.

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a solitaire game and don't make the same mistake I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars There IS an Undo Feature, June 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Hoyle Solitare and Mahjong Tiles (CD-ROM)
I almost didn't buy it because other reveiws said the game lacked an undo feature. Perhaps in older editions, but the one I bout last week has an undo for every game I've tried so far.

This game is tremendously varied. It will take months of steady play to go through every game once. The MaJong tiles even have an option where you can design your own layouts, if you ever get tired of the ones they have.

And you can decide to play with someone elso, too! I'm glad I've got it (although it may take more of my time than it should!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware this outdated software, September 26, 2003

This software is designed to run on a monitor at 640x480 resolution. This means that if you are using a relatively new computer (less than 5-6 years old) your resolution is probably greater than 640x480. If so, the game area will not fill your screen, rather it will shrink depending on how high your resolution is. The window you are running in will fill the screen, but Sierra fills the space not used by the shrinking game area with black. My monitor is a couple of years old, but was designed to run at 1280x1024. The actual game area uses about the center 1/3 of the screen. The card backs on the Solitaire are so small I have to strain to read them. I guess you could change your screen resolution before you play and then change it back afterwards, but that makes the game too much trouble for me. It is a shame too, because the games are quite good (probably 4 stars) if you can see them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large varieties of both games, July 14, 2000

This review is from: Hoyle Solitare and Mahjong Tiles (CD-ROM)
This is the 2000 release of the Hoyle title with added variations in both solitaire and mahjong games. With 50 solitaire and 60 MJ choices, you'll probably find one or two new ones to try.

The mahjong game is for one or two players. For those of you looking for the 4 player traditional table game, THIS IS NOT IT.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Negative Tren, October 28, 2000

We had the old DOS version of Hoyle Solitaire (1988 Copyright) and when I bought a new computer we wanted to update to a current version. Installed new version and found the following: 1.) Autoplay disappeared. Lets one play out finished game without manually clicking each card. 2.) Replay game is missing. Sometimes it took several tries to win a game, but this is gone now; you can't try again. I re-installed the old version from 1988 (One 1.4MB diskette) and find it better than the current version. Any owner of the old DOS version who buys this version will be severely disappointed; you spent money to downgrade to an inferior product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very Mac OSX-friendly . . ., May 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hoyle Solitare and Mahjong Tiles (CD-ROM)
Not sure how this package of games works on a PC, but is is not very Mac OSX-friendly, from what I can tell. (It is listed as Mac friendly, but I suspect it is probably more PC-oriented.) There are no drop-down menus, and finding instructions for the numerous games - - when there are some - - is not easy, either. The printed materials are virtually useless for this purpose, also. Finally, it seems to be fickle about whether it will let you add players. In short: the CD has dozens of games you can play; but if you are unfamiliar with the game's rules or objects, you wind-up having to try to figure it out for yourself. All-in-all, this CD is a letdown and not what one would expect from Hoyle.

absolutely worthless - the company no longer "supports" this game, which means that once you install it, you can't get it to play - in short terms - this is an outdated game and might a swell be tossed

5.0 out of 5 stars My parents love this, August 11, 2008

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hoyle Solitare and Mahjong Tiles (CD-ROM)
When I lived at home with my parents, I had this game on my computer. That copy had long since been lost in moves since then. This one was purchased so Dad could have it on his laptop. Mom & Dad both love playing this. Dad = Tiles. Mom = Solitaire. I have it since on my laptop at home & after 10 years, I still enjoy playing both as well. There are so many different layouts on the tiles, you will not get bored. The same is true with the Solitaire - there are so many different games to play.

This is a great game to have!
