Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

No matter what your level of HTML expertise is, the updated version of this book will keep you challenged, focused, and looking forward to the next chapter. This second edition of HTML Complete covers all of the bases and is loaded with examples that range from planning and designing Web pages to a brief introduction to XHTML.

Published by Sybex primarily as a compilation of many of the publisher's Web authors, this truly is a jam-packed, thousand-page "how-to" book. As the title suggests, it contains in-depth coverage of topics from the basic HTML platform to more exciting subjects like Dynamic HTML (DHTML), Active Server Pages (ASP), and cascading style sheets (CSS). It even includes a section on customizing Windows 98 by using HTML. No-nonsense exercises, tips, notes, and warnings for beginners fill the pages. For the more experienced HTML user, the Master's Reference appendix provides a wealth of information that will be useful as a one-stop reference.

This title enables users of all stripes to design and employ current and emerging Web technologies in the right way, while serving also as a solid reference. The reference component of HTML Complete will translate into a longer shelf life than your run-of-the-mill book on HTML. --Stephen W. Plain

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER QUALITY BARGAIN FROM SYBEX, February 23, 2003
By
reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Html Complete (Paperback)
In computing, most of the Sybex's 'Complete' series offer the best value for money. This "HTML Complete" testifies to this fact. The book simplified every aspect HTML.
With chapters that include Web typography, Dynamic HTML, XML, ASP, Perl, JavaScripts and so on, readers are bound to discover which tools are best suited for a particular purpose or circumstance. Apart from discussing how to code HTML, there is in-depth coverage of basic syntax, as well as how to optimize graphics employed in Web creations and publications.
Comprehensive suggestions on how to manipulate websites with contemporary technologies like audio and video were included.
This is a very useful HTML textbook. Anybody who reads it, will value the way it simplified interactive databases, secure transactions, and many programming methods. It was designed for all user-level; and I will not hesitate to recommend it for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value - admirable depth and breadth, May 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Html Complete (Paperback)
This is incredible value because of its price and because of its coverage - it has admirable depth and breadth. It's probably the only HTML book you need to give you good foundation knowledge. It then gives you a basic overview of what you need to learn in the future to become an advanced web site creator (like Javascript, CGI, and Perl). At times I found some concepts difficult to understand, and had to go to another source for an alternative explanation, but that was seldom and probably to be expected from time-to-time given the subject matter. Sometimes re-reading an earlier chapter was enough to clear up any confusion. I was very impressed (and surprised) to discover some topics, like web page design, were covered just as well in "HTML Complete" as more specialised books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Excellent Value!, September 28, 2001
This review is from: Html Complete (Paperback)
There's criteria I follow when buying a tech book for learning:
1. Does it have sufficient pictures so you know what the author is talking about?
2. Does it have an index? (Believe it or not some books don't! Like many of the Microsoft Reference books.)
3. Does it have step-by-step tutorials?
4. Does it have a glossary?

This book fulfilled all of these criteria which make learning much much easier. It has just the right balance of theory and practicals.

I'm an ASP programmer and I can make magic happen when it comes to dynamically building a web page or working with a database. But if you ever look at my pages you'd say they are the most boring looking pages you've ever seen.
So I got this book to learn more about dressing up pages and to learn those other tags I never took the time to learn that can make my work look better.
This book has great stuff in it, I've learned so much, so many attributes I never knew existed.
The reference section in the back is invaluable. For each tag and attribute the book describes it and gives an example of how to use it. There are examples all through the book that you can use immediately.
Thank you Sybex for compiling such a great book. Sybex compiled this book from the best of probably 8 books and put them all into one volume.
