HTML Visual Quick Reference takes the graphic approach to explaining HTML and the World Wide Web, eschewing text whenever a picture will do. Scharf knows the limits of this technique, especially with fewer than 160 pages to work with. You are not going to learn how to create an interface for your online catalog in your homepage with this book. Designed with HTML novices in mind, and rightly recognizing that too much information can be downright scary, this book takes you on a tour of HTML at the right pace. The book is organized predictably, with text and examples on the left and illustrations on the right. Six basic parts take you from the elements of HTML to text and form manipulation to design. Those who are absolutely terrified of anything remotely resembling programming will find this book invaluable.

What I liked: The book provides good references into the basics of building a web page. Each reference provides on the one page a "visual" example of what you are building, and on the opposite page a description of how to write the HTML for the example both in numbered steps and in text.

What to be wary of: Several examples leave out the closing of the HTML item being described. The one I discovered first was the "option" - "/option" used in creating forms. My web page editor very nicely added it (incorrectly) and it caused me some confusion to fix the problem. Be careful to close all items regardless of the examples.

Overall summary: The examples and "visual" set-up of the book far outweighs the minor, though sometime irritating errors.
