Book Description

October 2000
"L. Ron Hubbard established the 'Writers of the Future" Contest in late 1983, offering new and aspiring writers a chance to have their works seen and read. Since that beginning, the imaginative works from these exceptionally talented new writers in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror have been published in one of the "L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future" anthologies and have provided readers an escape to new worlds ever since.

As was L. Ron Hubbard's intention, many of these talents have gone on to become established writers. Now for the first time, sixteen creative stories from the first eight volumes that helped launch successful careers have been assembled, providing hours of reading entertainment--your ticket to spellbinding adventures across the galaxy.

The writers in this book include many you now know, who were-in most cases-first published in one of the earlier anthologies. These names include: James Alan Gardner, Karen Joy Fowler, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Robert Reed, Dean Wesley Smith, Ray Aldridge, Jamil Nasir, M. Shayne Bell, Jo Beverley, Leonard Carpenter, J.R. Dunn, Nancy Farmer, Astrid Julian, Michael H. Payne, Bruce Holland Rogers and Dave Wolverton.

This first-rate collection includes works from judges Anne McCaffrey, Frederick Pohl and Tim Powers, who if given the opportunity to enter this contest at the inception of their careers, would have done so with these well-told tales. Also included are invaluable tips on writing from Frank Herbert and Algis Budrys.

"Writers of the Future is a terrific program for new writers, and goodness knows, there are few enough of those. It has my heartiest support and unqualified recommendation." - Terry Brooks

"This contest has found some of the best new writers of the last decade." - Kristine Kathryn Rusch

"This has become a major tributary to the new blood in fantastic fiction." - Gregory Benford

This review is from: L. Ron Hubbard Presents The Best of Writers of the Future (Paperback)

L. Ron Hubbard is well known in the Science Fiction community as "the world's most prolific dead author," but perhaps his greatest contribution to the genre is the Writers of the Future contest.

This program is open to new writers only, and all work is reviewed by noted SF authors, anonymously (the submissions are numbered & coded.) The best from each quarter are chosen, and there are monetary prizes for the quarterly and annual winners. Part of the prize is that the work is published at the end of the year in that years book. Another part is that the winners are flown to LA for the awards ceremony.

Thus, each volume is completely full of new, unpublished work, by new authors chosen by the best writers in the field.

This is great for readers, because it ensures that nearly any fan will find a good proportion of the volume to be of interest to them, and the entire volume is full of well written stories. Interspersed in the book are how-to tips for new authors, so the book functions as a mini-textbook on SF writing, with articles about the business and well-written stories to demonstrate good writing.

But that is not the best part, the best part is that the program encourages new writers in the best possible mannerit pays them well for their work and publicizes it.

Over the 2+ decades that the program has run, it has launched a sizable number of new SF authors into their careers.

Any volume of this series is full of good reads, and they are often very fresh views in a field which has, over the decades, ranged from fresh and experimental to stodgy and hidebound. If you havent read a particular volume, you cannot go wrong in reading it.

Algis Budrys, the editor for the past few years, is well known as both a writer and editor in the SF field.
