Book Description

September 15, 2007
The best new science fiction and fantasy short stories from up-and-coming writers and every story is illustrated by budding new artists all winners of the annual Illustrators of the Future Contest. Established in 1983 by L. Ron Hubbard expressly for the aspiring writer, Writers of the Future has become the most respected and significant forum for new talent in all aspects of speculative fiction. The elite character of the contest is evident from the roster of judges: Kevin J. Anderson, Doug Beason, Gregory Benford, Algis Budrys, Orson Scott Card, Brian Herbert, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Eric Kotani, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Frederik Pohl, Jerry Pournelle, Tim Powers, Robert Silverberg and K.D. Wentworth. In 1988, Mr. Hubbard's vision inspired a contest for new and aspiring illustrators seeking to become speculative fiction artists. The list of judges for the illustrators' contest is no less impressive than that of the writers' contest and represents a virtual who's who of the field including Frank Frazetta, Vincent DiFate, Bob Eggleton, Stephen Hickman and Stephen Youll. Since its inception, the contest has helped place more than two hundred and fifty novels and 2,500 short stories on bookshelves around the world. The Writers of the Future Award has also earned its place alongside the Hugo and Nebula awards in the triad of speculative fiction's most prestigious acknowledgements of literary excellence.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Those looking for a new group of classic, hard science fiction writers need look no further than the latest volume of Galaxy's always-reliable original anthology series. A distinguished panel of judges, including Orson Scott Card, Larry Niven and Jack Williamson, selected 13 quality stories by relative newcomers touched with imagination and inventive plotting. The standout is Jeff Carlson's "The Frozen Sky," a pulse-pounding account of an encounter with extraterrestrial life beneath the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa, but several others will linger in the reader's mind. Fresh names worth watching include Tony Pi, who presents a chilling story of the world's end, and Douglas Texter, whose vision of reality television's future features time-traveling lensmen sent to capture historic events. Also included are essays by Hubbard and artist Judith Miller, and illustrations from a number of different artists, a mixed collection marked by occasional brilliance. While readers will relish these short pieces, many of the ideas explored in them would likely work well in a longer format, auguring well for the future of these talented up-and-comers.

Review

"Writers of the Future is a terrific program for new writers, and goodness knows, there are few enough of those. It has my heartiest support and unqualified recommendation." Terry Brooks, Author "A very generous legacy from L. Ron Hubbard a fine, fine fiction writer for the writers of the future." Anne McCaffrey, Author "Prior to L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest starting, there was no field which enabled the new writer to compete with his peers other new writers." Kevin J. Anderson, Author "Here's skill and storytelling fervor aplenty these writers of the future have already arrived!" Robert Silverberg, Author "The Writers of the Future Contest has not only provided a place where new writers could break into print for the first time but it also has a record of nurturing and discovering writers who have gone on to make their mark in the science fiction field. Long may it continue!" Neil Gaiman, Author "This collection shows why I'm happy to be a judge for the Writers of the Future Contest it always finds great stories by the new writers who will be winning Hugo and Nebula Awards a few years from now." Tim Powers, Author "...the best-selling SF anthology series of all time." Locus Magazine "With the prestige of having major figures in SF as judges, and substantial prizes handed out, the Hubbard Awards have to be considered together with the Hugos and Nebulas as forming a triad of major science fiction awards." Science Fiction Writers of America Bulletin, Fall 1988 --Ann McCafffrey

Barnes & Noble Explorations Review "In 1983, L. Ron Hubbard began the annual Writers of the Future contest as a singularly unique means for gifted new science fiction/fantasy writers and illustrators to have their work acknowledged on a worldwide stage. Since then, over the past 22 years, the contest has become 'the standard by which any aspiring writer and illustrator in science fiction and fantasy measure their work,' according to editor Algis Budrys. --Paul Goat Allen

Publishers Weekly and Library Journal publisher Mr. William McGorry presented the Library Journal Award of Excellence to the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests. Both the Mayor of Seattle and the Governor of Washington sent proclamations declaring August 19th Writers and Illustrators of the Future Day. --Publishers Weekly

L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of Future Vol 23

I just completed reading Writers of the Future vol 23 and thought it had the best collection of short stories I have read in some time. I am a fan of Writers of the Future and have been for some time. This book had several story ideas that really impressed me with their freshness. This is one thing I really like about this series. Stories I especially liked were "Primetime" by Douglas Texter and "The Sun God at Dawn, Rising From a Lotus Position" and "The Stone Cipher" by Tony Pi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool ideas, October 10, 2007
This review is from: L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future, Vol. 23 (Mass Market Paperback)
I've got to say that I'm pretty impressed with these guys. I'm an illustrator in the book, and was able to meet all the authors during the conference. The stories they've written are surprisingly original, and the writing quality is very very professional. My favorite is Primetime by Douglas Texter, but they're all remarkably memorable.
