3.0 out of 5 stars A Monumental Effort in Space., February 16, 2007
The Space Telescope, called "Hubble" after the first astronomer to prove the existence of galazies beyond the Milky Way, Edwin Hubble, thirty-three years after his death. The ST mirror was flawed after the space shuttle took it aloft to orbit 370 miles above the Earth. The world's largest telescope is in Russia; the best-known is the Hale at Alaomar Observatory in California. Jeff spent several summers at Kitt Peak's three telescopes in Arizona. It was Isaac Newton who invented the reflecting telescope, using mirrors, in the 1660s. Before that, Galileo used the refractor which had been invented by Hans Lippenshey in 1608.

The Hubble was delayed being deployed because of the 'Challenger' tragedy in 1986. When it finally was in place in our universe, the camera took blurry pictures due to the flaw in the mirror. Jeff transferred the information which came back to NASA in Boulder, Colorado, until the telescope was repaired. At intervals, it needs maintenance to be sure it is still functioning properly. In the meantime, Jeff escorts groups of students to the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California, and inspirign other in Nashville. His computer work kept the program going until and while the Hubble was given a new mirror. It was truly a miracle.
