This review is from: Hubertusmesse: Bohemian, French & Austrian Hunting Music for Parforce Horns (Audio CD)
This isn't about great music. It is about experiencing history thru cultural artiface. The parforce horn, most associated with the ritual hunt of europe goes way back in time. ( The Romans had an equivalent ). The long horn has a golden baritone voice that is most often serene and plaintiff. But at the upper register the harmonics of the tube cause a jarring displacement where the horn just can't seem to place high F and blatts between two notes. This quirk actually became part of the glamor of the instrument; and part of it's demon side.

In europe's long love affair with military carnage the hunting horn was mated to the skreel of cornets as signature that the cavalrie had taken to the field and today they were hunting humans.

But this recording is not about military music. It collects regional hunting and civic pieces that vary in mood from sublime to jocular to majesterial.

Listen to the samples. Careful you don't get hooked. :)
