4.0 out of 5 stars Four Stars for the Fourth in the Sheriff Bo Tully Series
The Huckleberry Murders is the fourth book in McManus's Sheriff Bo Tully mystery series. There isn't much of a mystery in this book - dangerous drug dealers seem to flock to Blight County, Idaho - but it is amusing, well-written, and entertaining.

There are even more attractive women in this book than in previous books in the series and Sheriff Tully seems...

2.0 out of 5 stars Why is McManus writing this poor series?, January 2, 2011
This review is from: The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries) (Hardcover)
This book is just plain bad: bad plot, tiresome romantic/sexual innuendo, poor writing. This book is nothing but one declarative sentence after another. I can't believe this book is written by McManus, who actually writes compound sentences and uses clauses and phrases and other interesting grammatical devices that improve writing in his humorous outdoor writing. The characters, which are normally somewhat flat, are really flat in this book. The only redeeming feature is that Pap doesn't have much of a role. The idea that Bo Tully is some fantastic womanizer is really getting silly and obnoxious. Frankly, there just isn't much to say about this book that is good.

Writing a mystery series is an ill-conceived idea by McManus. This is not his strength, and he doesn't appear to want to put much effort in the last 2 books.

Let this series die a well-deserved death, Mr. McManus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four Stars for the Fourth in the Sheriff Bo Tully Series, November 7, 2010

This review is from: The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries) (Hardcover)
The Huckleberry Murders is the fourth book in McManus's Sheriff Bo Tully mystery series. There isn't much of a mystery in this book - dangerous drug dealers seem to flock to Blight County, Idaho - but it is amusing, well-written, and entertaining.

There are even more attractive women in this book than in previous books in the series and Sheriff Tully seems to spend more time with them than he devotes to his job. Fortunately, McManus brings back Pap and Dave and introduces us to another interesting old man - Poke Wimsey. McManus has an especially fine touch when writing about old men.

Despite all the female company, Bo seems to have no children and it is a little surprising that this is never mentioned. Even though the Tullys have been Sheriffs in Blight County for 100 years or more, the line seems to be at an end.

The real surprise in this book is reading about Pap Tully's boyhood adventures with Crazy Eddie Muldoon! This name will be very familiar to readers of McManus's outdoor humor as the boyhood friend with whom he had some of his most memorable adventures. This leads to the obvious conjecture that Pap Tully is none other than Patrick McManus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic McManus, May 25, 2011
This book is classic McManus. The man certainly knows how to spin a yarn. You do not have to be a hardcore mystery reader to appreciate his amusing tales. I have never been disappointed with his Sheriff Tully mysteries and I look forward to future installments.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, March 30, 2011

I grew up reading Patrick McManus. I own several books of his and have loved them all. I've been lost in the woods and thought of a Modified Stationary Panic. I told my wife the other day that she could run on the treadmill if she wanted but I was going to follow the MFFF. I grew up in Idaho in many of the places that he has written about.

The other day I bought this book thinking that it would be fun to read it to my kids. I was expecting something along the lines of everything else of McManus' that I've read. The cover even had the same quirky caricatures as his other books. Not only was I disappointed that there is nothing funny about this book, but I really have to give this book a horrible rating on it's own. The plot was weak and predictable and the characters were one-dimensional. I rate the quality somewhere along the lines of a Loius Lamour without the heart, romance, or fun. I'll be disappointed if I ever hear the phrase "the Blight way" again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, December 11, 2010

This review is from: The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries) (Hardcover)
This is a great book for anyone who either enjoys the outdoors or a good mystery. This book is the third in a series by Patrick Mcmanus, who has been published in Field & Stream and Outdoor Life. The whole series follows the exploits of a small town sherriff who of course solves mysteries along with a most interesting team of handpicked characters. There is mystery, action, outdoor adventures, comic relief, interesting characters, and even a little bit of a love story in all of these novels. The mysteries will keep you guessing and always leave the reader with several suspects to choose from until the very end. This book is not one that takes the reader several weeks to complete and is broken up into many short chapters to provide the reader with a good stopping point at almost any time. Yet it is also long enough to provide the reader with a complete storyline and plenty of enjoyment. This book almost begs them to read the whole thing again, even knowing who the villian already is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys any of the above genres of books. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is not an avid reader. Almost anyone can find something in this book to relate to. After reading this series, it has definately became one of my most liked reads.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice and short in it's gere, December 2, 2010
This review is from: The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries) (Hardcover)
This book is a nice, fun and quick book in it's genre - the last part of the sentence being as important as the first. A summery of the story could be:"suddenly five shots were fired from the raft so fast they sounded as if they had come from an automatic weapon in stead of a lever- action rifle ( p. 200). And the amount of blood is not worse than in this conversation. "I have never killed anyone, but I have often wondered what it would be like" . " like eating raw oysters" Pape said " the first goes down pretty hard but the next one are a lot easier" (p. 203). So, that is it.

This review is from: The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (Sheriff Bo Tully Mysteries) (Hardcover)
As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Pat McManus's first person tales in "Outdoor Life", I have become a fan of his venture into the world of murder mystery stories. I've read all four he's written so far and find that he doesn't dwell on the gruesomeness of the crimes. Instead, he injects enough of his humour to keep things light and enjoyable. He even reminds the reader of some of his childhood friends we got to know in his earlier stories.

As always, Patrick McMannis infuses his mystery stories with dry humor. I hope there will be more Bo Tully mysteries in the future.A thoroughly enjoyable read.
