5.0 out of 5 stars Industrial Strength, November 14, 2010

This review is from: Hudson 90162 Super Sprayer Professional 2 Gallon Sprayer Poly (Lawn & Patio)
My wife and I decided to re-coat our concrete driveway and colored concrete paver bricks. We scrubbed with a muriatic acid solution and a pressure washer which resulted in a clean surface for the clear "wet look" lacquer coating. The first part went well and we decided to clean the garden sprayer since the lacquer dried very quickly and partially clogged the spray nozzle. The lacquer specified that only xylene solvent could be used for clean up - which we did. It cleaned the sprayer really well and we went on to refill the unit and pressure it up. It was then that the sprayer hose broke down and started leaking catastrophically, spewing the lacquer everywhere. We went through two additional sprayers before we finished the job. Recognizing that the solvents would eat up PVC tubing used in the sprayers we searched the local "big box" hardware stores for something more solvent resistant but had no success. The sprayers mentioned on the lacquer label could be found online for $150-200 which was more than I wanted to spend. I was lucky enough to find this Hudson sprayer at Amazon that had the solvent resistant features I was looking for. The price was right and the unit arrived in less than a week. Taking it out of the box and assembling the sprayer demonstrated heavy duty construction and solvent resistant hoses and fittings. We finished the back decking using the new Hudson sprayer and were impressed by the ease of use and robust quality of the unit. It is exactly what I was looking for at one sixth the price of the other solvent compatible units. We are very pleased with this sprayer and are confident it will provide many years of service for all of our spraying needs.
Update December 12, 2010 - after the second round of cleaning the unit out with xylene solvent, the hose started to "melt" and the sealing gasket started to show signs of attack as well. Everything else seemed to hold up OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars No wimpy sprayer, September 25, 2010

I've only used this once but it seems like it will get the job done. It's a little heavier than the lower-end stuff most stores sell but I think it should last a good long while. This product seems worth the cost.

This review is from: Hudson 90162 Super Sprayer Professional 2 Gallon Sprayer Poly (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased a private-branded version of this U.S.-made sprayer a month ago, and am very pleased with it. The pump handle shaft is a thick, rigid plastic tube, unlike the thin, flimsy metal rods that competitors use. I've sprayed an acre with it so far, and it works well. As the pump and tank are made of plastics, it is impervious to rust. The hardware store where I bought it carries inexpensive seal rebuild kits, so if it develops leaks in the future, I should be able to maintain it for many years to come.

The pump handle is fairly comfortable for carrying the sprayer, but it would have been better if a shoulder strap had been included for those times when one is using it continuously for several hours. Although some Hudson professional sprayers come equipped with a black web shoulder strap, as far as I can determine, the strap isn't offered as an aftermarket accessory from Hudson, so you'll have to improvise.

The private-brand version that I bought differs from the this sprayer in that it came with a sturdy brass spray wand, like that used on the Hudson 90182FT Farm Tough 2 Gallon Sprayer Poly, and an extra brass fan spray nozzle in the box. A cone nozzle was pre-installed on the wand. Unfortunately, Hudson hasn't devised a way to store extra nozzles on the sprayer, so losing the part is an uncomfortable possibility. I solved this by buying a 6-inch length of brass bead chain from the hardware store, a small plastic flip-cap polyethylene pill container from a local pharmacy, and secured the container to one of the shoulder strap lugs on the sprayer. That way the extra nozzle goes with the sprayer, and when I swap nozzles, the unused one has a secure storage space. There is room for improvement here: Hudson should add a storage feature for an extra nozzle, or two.

The instructions are clear enough, but they're printed newspaper-page size on a piece of cheap, tan newsprint. I eventually got the instructions and parts diagram in PDF form from Hudson, formatted for printing on 8.5x11 paper, but it took some doing, because they use Google Docs to host their file storage, instead of their own Web server (hdhudson-dot-com). Getting Google Docs to yield a PDF file that one can save locally was frustrating, and a request to Hudson to email me a copy went unanswered. The trick was to click the link to print the document, and when the print menu came up in the browser, there was an option to save the file instead. Not intuitive!
