Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-- Lourie recounts a 315-mile canoe journey from the headwaters of the Hudson to New York City. Each page is liberally illustrated with good quality full-color photographs; those of the locks at the Champlain canal are particularly effective due to the unusually low vantage point of the canoe. Only one map is included, and readers must continually flip back to it to monitor the author's position and progress. The information on the history of logging on the river is interesting, but in general, the photographs provide more impact than the rather lifeless text. For an overall sense of the vastness and variety of the river, Thomas Locker's Where the River Begins (Dial, 1984) is more compelling but has no information. George Ancona's excellent Riverkeeper (Macmillan, 1990) focuses mostly on the job of the riverkeeper and his monitoring of pollution. Lourie's effort fills the gap in geography and sports collections. --Kate Hegarty Bouman, Susquehanna Valley Junior High School, Conklin, NY

Review

The author spent three weeks traveling the length of the Hudson River, from its wild, mountainous beginning at Lake Tear of the Clouds, past rapids, farmlands, castles and palisades, to its wide busy mouth in downtown Manhattan, where the mountains are replaced by skyscrapers of glass and steel. Throughout the 315-mile trip, the author shares pertinent geographical, historical and scientific information, including environmental concerns relating to the Hudson. Attractive, full-color photographs and a simple map add to the appeal and usefulness of this nonfiction picture book. -- Children's Literature

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey, March 31, 2000
By A Customer
Living in upstate NY, the Hudson is a majestic presence flowing by on it's way to the city. I'd been to the source, and parts here and there, but this book was an amazing opportunity to travel the entire length of the river, see the sights and get to know the many characters of the river. This is one of those great books that make you curl up and escape....and wish you were right there in the canoe!

I was very satisfied with the condition of the three books I ordered. I give them rave reviews because they were like new. I was more than satisfied about the timing of shipping and delivery. I needed them in time to give as a gift to my three students who were leaving town. The books arrived a week before the expected delivery date which was excellent for me.
