This review is from: Hudson River Day Line: The Story of a Great American Steamboat Company (Hardcover)
I borrowed the 1965 version of this book from my library sevaral times over the past few years, and it is a fulfilling account of one of the great waterways of the country and a company that provided a service of exellance for nearly a century. The transportion of passengers from New York City to the Hudson River ports of Albany and other places that was and is still remembered by those that lived and still live in the region, and one can see the big white river boats in pictures of the great ocean liners in New York Harbor docked in berths nearby (check out the William H. Miller jr. books and pictures of the ships collectively in port.) This book includes narratives on the Hudson River Day Line, the Hudson River Night Line, Old Bay Line, and other operators of some of America's greatest riverboats. The passenger ships of the Hudson River rank right alongside the legendary boats of the Mississippi River, Pacific coastal, and the Great Lakes regions. A great book over all:) I hope to get the newer 1990 book in the mail, though, as I believe it's been updated. The Line was still operating by 1965 with one boat (the 'Robert Fulton'), although the service itself ended by 1971. The five stars cover both the 1965 and 1990 versions.
