1.0 out of 5 stars major disappointment January 13, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a huge fan of Wearstler's irreverent, colorful design, but this book was a serious letdown. For a tome titled "Hue", she was hardly creative with real color. The fabric cover itself is just white! The entire book is just 12 rooms or so shot from different angles to highlight a particular artifact in a particular color. Worst of all, she used the same books and artifacts over and over. The glamor shots of her and her sons were out of place and the spread of her jewelry and shoe collections were quite self-indulgent. While text in a design book is often superfluous, hers is limited to an "interview" at the beginning without any real discussion of the rooms presented. Don't waste your money on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skip this one January 7, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not the best book for realistic inspiration for your next interior project.
Very eccentric for my taste and I like living outside of the creative box.

Buy this one after you have all the others on your list.

Nice photography.

The shots with Kelly & her boys seem too staged.

I'm going to return my copy. I don't think I'll ever feel the need to flip through it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Empress' New Clothes December 31, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Yes, the book is certainly colorful. If that's all you're looking for, you could buy a Pantene color book. If you're looking for interiors that aren't patently ridiculous, look elsewhere. I'm amazed that Ms. Wearstler finds clients who buy off on her design schemes, as they seem designed for show, not living. But of course we should have been tipped off by the cover of the book that this particular tome is all about Kelly, not about real design. I have actually admired some of her work in the past, but I found nothing in this book that was remotely livable.

Another example of self promotion with no real content or ideas. Dissappointing. Look up her work on the internet and save your $$$

4.0 out of 5 stars Evolving beauty January 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kelly Wearstler is confident enough in her design ability that she tries to challenge herself with going in new directions pretty often. She has defintely proved with this book and her design work for Viceroys Anguilla and Snowmass that she is not a one-Hollywood Regency-trick pony. She has to be commended for not doing years of the same interiors.

This book is great as an inspiration piece. I have been overwhelmingly inspired by her work. That said, because Kelly's aesthetic is so layered and textured, it would have been great for her to talk about some of the specific treatments. For example, are all of the wallpapers custom? What was her inspiration for the color and design of the wallpapers? What was the overall feel or direction she was going for when designing her house? How did she select the artwork? Are the furniture pieces high and low or all high end (okay, so they are all high end)? It would be great to get inside her head a little bit.

But it seems like most people will probably never have the opportunity to examine her design process with any degree of satisfaction. And I say that only because Kelly Wearstler has turned into a major brand with product extensions all over the place. Brands don't like to be controversial and they don't like to reveal too much about themselves to keep the mystique and fantasy going. I could be wrong, just a feeling.

I mean, sure Kelly's in this book with her kids, but it is all about creating a fantasy of having it all: personal beauty, stunning interiors, great kids, a house that has movie star lineage, an awesome wardrobe, glamour and above all wealth. I think she's very smart and media savvy to do it; her books are basically brochures she gets paid for creating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Inspiration! December 4, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Kelly's book "Hue" is chocked full of beautiful photography of her work, which offers pages and pages of color, textural & interior inspiration. The pages are filled to the brim with photo's and no text, and are organized by color theme. This book is not a "how-to" book with decorating tips but rather a book filled with the brilliant inspiration and beauty of Kelly's work. Overall, it's a wonderful one to add to any library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! November 20, 2009
Format:Hardcover
After waiting months for Kelly Wearstler's new book to arrive, I finally received a copy and I'm not disappointed. The pages are dripping with color and Kelly's one-of-a-kind style. The book has has a Q&A in the front with the designer and then it's chaptered by colors...but not just any colors...think Camellia, Wisteria & Vermillion and Jonquil Citrine & Dahlia....very fresh and exciting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright, Bold, Blah, Beautiful December 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Kelly W. has no problems in the confidence department. Each dazzling page of her work shocks, surprises and forces the viewer to consider new ways of looking at the world. I cannot say I am a fan of her work but I will say that flipping through this bold portfolio inspired me to be a little more daring in my own interiors. I cannot imagine actually living in one of these spaces. I think I would quickly tire of the decor. Still, I must say that after having seen this book I was haunted by the wallpaper that lines the interior of the book. I just kept thinking about it until I had to admit to myself that if it came in gold rather than red I would LOVE it in my own mudroom. In my opinion, the best part of this book is the exhaustive list of colors on page one and two, starting with Abalone, Absinthe, Abyss and ending with Zinzolin, Zircon, Zymenchlora. Read this book to challenge your senses.
