THE CAMERA DESIGN --> 5 STARS

The HUE HD Webcam is modern and has enough "style" to even appease my graphic designer senses. The camera body's construction is sturdy and the gooseneck is rigid, so stays in place when flexed. The camera attaches to the base via a USB connector (convenient if you have a monitor or laptop with a USB port and don't want to use the base). The base is weighted and has a cloth bottom so it won't scratch your desk. The overall look and construction of the camera is 5 STARS.

THE SOFTWARE --> 4 STARS

After searching for a few months I decided to get this webcam because of its claims to be fully compatible with MAC OSX, which is true. First, I went to the company's website to check if there had been any updates to the software. **The software release on the website is version 1.3 and the CD that is provided says version 1.1.** I opted to download version 1.3 instead of installing from the CD. Installation was easy. The software has a bunch of video and compression options that are useful.

COMPATIBILITY --> 2 STARS **Must read for all Mac users**

I know that there isn't much info on the product because it is relatively new and most, if not all of the support info on their website refers to PC issues. So, I contacted their technical support because I wanted to know if it would work with iChat. Turns out the HUE HD Webcam is not supported by iChat. Here is the response that I got from their technical support team.

iChat doesn't work with HUE HD Webcam, because the software was designed
to use Firewire Webcams. Hue HD WEBCAM have a USB interface like most
webcams you can find at stores. The alternative way to use iChat with
HUE HD Webcam, is ICHATUSB here is the link for a free download trail

So, I went to the website and downloaded the software and presto, the camera is located by iChat. The only downfall is that you have to spend another $9.95 for the software.

I have not tested the software with Skype, AOL or Yahoo but I have read other reviews stating that they worked fine with those programs.

OVERALL --> 3 STARS

Overall, I'm giving it 3 STARS because I feel that the compatibility issue is a big negative for Mac users. Hopefully the company will wise up and package their webcam with software that will operate the camera without having to refer a consumer to purchase separate software.

Pros:

-Super cool style that will suit just about anyone
-Sturdy construction
-Picture quality is above average webcams
-Voice quality is excellent
-Software interface is simple with numerous options
-Removable from base (can plug into USB equipped monitor or laptop)

Cons:

-Not supported by iChat unless you purchase iChatUSB software (another $9.95)
-Slightly expensive
-Little Mac support information on company website

I will add to my review as soon as I have tested it on other Instant Message programs.

I purchased one of these cameras out of curiosity and I was pleasantly surprised at the image quality. I use mine as a document camera in a classroom and when running in video mode at 1280 x 768 resolution, this camera does the job very well. The manual focus ring is a welcome feature that many web cams do not offer. The mounting possibilities are virtually endless (since you can mount it in the base or in any USB port). I haven't found any other brand/model of webcam remotely in the same price range that can compete with the HUE HD.

Bought this for an OS 10.4 Mac and have yet to get it to consistently work. Sometimes through a bizarre sequence of opening Quicktime, opening an image, then turning on a chat program, the cam will start sending images to the chat program (Yahoo Messenger in this case), but not always.
No direct phone help on their site. And the FAQs are almost entirely for Windows users.
THe product is too new for user help on-line in newsgroups.

It DOES however, work just fine on the PC.

You can buy this same web cam at K-mart for $19.99. Thats were I bought mine and it is great.

This camera is very appealing to the eye and has a wonderful flexible gooseneck that holds the position you place it in quite well. For that, I gave TWO STARS.

However. This is a garbage camera. I got a great deal on one BRAND NEW IN THE PLASTIC for $40 + shipping. Retail they go for about $79.95 plus shipping charges.
As of January 1st, 2012, they are on sale on the website for $39.95

I run a Mac Laptop computer updated with the Lion OS. I searched for weeks for an external webcam that had the flexible gooseneck and would allow me to place it as close to what I was recording as I wished. This webcam seemed perfect. After a few reviews and many many google searches, I came to the conclusion that this would work.

I was so. Wrong.

The website states that the camera is compatible for both Windows and Mac computers however there is no where on the box stating that there is ANY sort of Mac compatibility. No big deal, a few more google searches and I learn that the disc included holds the mac installation software.

I open the plastic, and remove the plastic holder holding the camera to find the discs.

The camera was cute, I got a pink one, not too heavy, the stand looked sturdy and there is a small yellow sticker over the usb end of the plastic holder saying to install the software and drivers BEFORE plugging in the camera.

So I pop in the disc and with a couple of clicks have started the installation process.
Dragged and dropped the file in my apps folder
now the drivers.
Installation failed. WHAT???
Google searched, nothing.
Google searched a few more times to find a small forum where it is stated that if you have an OLDER MODEL HueHD to use a specific type of .dmg file.
couldnt hurt right? Time to uninstall and try again.
Uninstall failed. WHAT??
dragged to bin and emptied trash, let's hope that worked...
Run the older file, Installation successful.. Okay :)
Plug in the camera and run my program Camtwist

unplugged the camera and tried to run camtwist
ran just fine and used my built in iSight.
okay no big deal, the app doesnt support the cam

well crap i cant use the camera with the one program i want.
maybe you have to run Webcam Monitor?
Booted it up, oh wait. it's running my built in iSight, no big deal i'll just have to switch the cams.

devices... the Hue HD isn't on the list. I have camtwist, manycam, iGoggles and my built in iSight

Okay, forget mac, i'll run it on a Windows OS.

I have parallels on my macbook, And i run windows 7
the software on the disc worked just fine, i didnt have to track down the alternate .exe and camfrog runs and opens a chatroom, but the picture is transparent and camfrog tells me I need to set up a camera.

Manycam will recognize the camera and display the picture (since it doesnt support my built in iSight) but thats about as far as I got

I played with this camera for a little while on both mac and pc and the picture freezes on both. Using the Desktop Monitor on mac and both DM and Manycam on PC
Another thing I wanted to use this cam for was streaming live with websites such as Livestream, Ustream, and BlogTV. The cam froze on both OS's, Mac and PC after about a minute.

Very upset with this product.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE.
This webcam came to me brand new, in the box, in the plastic, not smashed or bent or anything, as perfect as if i had plucked it off of a shelf and there were TONS of deal pixels.

This MAY work for you if youre ONLY using Skype, Yahoo, MSN, or something very popular but if you want this to stream video, get a different camera. I dont use any of the above but digging deep on Google, most people say that the video will feeze after about a minute recording, or streaming.

I got a refund, and I'm still looking for a webcam.

can't get it to work for video calls. biggest problem is no phone # for tech support. email support has not been helpful.

I have a Vista and an XP computer and the HUE works great on both! I expected the worst because I got mine at a huge discount, but I was surprised. The picture and sound quality are excellent and I love the ability to twist it in multiple directions. I have plugged 3 into my computer at a time with no problem to watch video of myself and others at the same time. It's also nice to be able to look over my shoulder while working as I aim one at the door behind me. I do some singing-songwriting and have used it like a mic to record song ideas and I'm amazed at the tone accuracy. I have a Shure Dynamic 588SB from professional singing years back and the Hue Webcam sounds much better than it ever did! While it may not be the modern choice for professional music, it certainly is great for many uses. My only problem was with the use - I had to be careful to reset the file-save name every time I wanted to record something or I would write over the last save and I had to check the audio to be sure it was turned on each time - it didn't stay on. It was easy to get familiar with it though.

For the money you will not get a better product. I could have lived without the pink color, but for 20 bucks, this was a steal.

This didn't work the way it was supposed to, and I bought this because it specifically stated it worked for macs. Not making that mistake again. Just going to pay the price for a really really really nice Apple web cam I know will work instead of going cheaper on one that maybe-probably will work. I returned this shortly thereafter.

Finally found a mac compatible product which can be very hard to find or very expensive. The picture and sound quality is not top notch but you get what you pay for :-)
