Anyone who has ever owned a teddy bear will know that each one is unique. The threadbare paws, worn fur, frayed nose and loose ears caused by many years of love, give each bear its own individual personality.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"I believe that the more teddy bears are loved, the nicer they become." Isn't this true of children and people in general? Don't miss all the golden opportunities for examining and talking about how and why people and teddies behave and feel the way they do. For instance, 'Shilling' didn't sell in the toy shop because he was different from the other bears. He was "unwanted for so long" that "he still finds it hard to believe that anyone could really love him." Many children (and adults) reject friendship and caring from others because they have never had it before and are afraid to be hurt or because they've been rejected themselves. From a very early age, children can learn about the good reason for what seems to them to be unreasonable behavior in other people.

As they grow to understand the intricacies of human behavior, they are less inclined to take it personally and are able to accept the foibles of others and to value all people.

P.J. and Squiffy get into mischief together: "One day, they stuck the pages of Margaret's recipe book together with honey, and on another, they stuffed soap into Tiddly-Wink's trumpet, so that it blew bubbles when he tried to play it!" Playing tricks on people is a whole can of worms which children need to open with their parents. Sometimes, tricks can be inappropriate, inconsiderate or even cruel. Children should know that many people never learn this and continue to play bad jokes on others long into their adulthood. The whole notion of "what is funny" comes into question.
"All old teddies have a tale to tell." Story-Telling is an activity which benefits teller and listener in countless ways. For the spinner of the tale, it develops communication skills, memory, creative thought and expression and sensitivity to the listener. For the listener, it develops attention span, memory, reasoning and interpretive skills. Much can be shared through story-telling: feelings, thoughts and ideas, information and history. Children love to hear true and embellished accounts of their parents' lives, especially of their own childhood. The Competition offered on the inside back cover encourages children to write to Pajama Joe on behalf of their own special teddies. Their teddy's story is likely to be their story. Every opportunity for children to tell or write about themselves is an opportunity for them to get to know and understand themselves (and others) better.
