About the Author

Canadian-born Patti Stren has written and illustrated seventeen books, including There's a Rainbow In My Closet, which is currently being made info a live-action/animated television series by Original Pictures, GinéGroupe, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her creation Mona is featured in Mona Mon Amour, a short animated film directed, produced, and animated by Academy Award-nominated animator Michael Sporn. Another one of her creations -- a charming crocodile -- is the mascot of GROG (Citizens Reunited to Overcome Cancer). Patti lives in New York City with her husband, a physician, and their menagerie of pets that includes Bubba the python. Like Elliot Patti needs her daily ration of hugs, but she refrains from hugging Bubba because he tends to get carried away.

I first bought this book in 1977 for my two daughters. It was one of their favorite books. At the end, we always shared a porcupine hug like Elliot and Thelma. Today I am reading it to my two granddaughters. It is a treasured book in my home.
The 1977 edition was in black & white.... nice to see some color.

"Elliot Kravitz was not like other porcupines, who were quite content having quills and being left alone. Elliot was not content. He wanted a friend. A friend to talk to,...play with and tell his best secrets to. But mostly, he wanted a friend to hug."

Elliot doesn't want to hurt anyone so he tries hugging telephone poles, parking meters and traffic lights but they just don't cut it! Next he tries to disguise himself as a birthday present and even a Christmas tree (very cute) that people like but to no avail. Still he receives no hugs. I think this has a great lesson to children that they should always be themselves and then they will know who their true friends are. To focus on who DOES like them and furthermore, what THEY LIKE to do--NOT to focus on who DOESN'T like them and what they ARE NOT good at.

Takeaway value: Go after what you want! Elliot does that...and so you think...maybe, somehow...he gets his hug?

I bought this book for my two year old niece, Lilly and we adore it. Patti Stren has created a character in Elliot Kravitz who lives in us all. Elliot has won a place in my heart along with the Runaway Bunny and Corduroy. I hope that Lilly will still be reading Hug Me at my age. I wouldn't doubt it. Thanks Patti Stren. You have touched us.
